Need Some Advice

I have a friend with an '82 Z28 and the LG4 automatic setup. His car has no mods at all and it has about 170,000 miles . Anyways, theres some real ****y little punk at my school who just got his dream car: a 1988 Civic CRX Si . Its a 5 speed and the only mods it has is 2.5" exhaust with a 3" tip, and the red japanese lettering on the back window (he honestly thinks it makes his car faster). I'd like to shut this kid up myself but I drive an '84 berlinetta with a carbed 2.8 . Do you think the '82 Z28 would beat him? The only thing the civic kid has going for him is his ability to shift.

I would have to rule in favor of the CRX... the Si's came with something around 125 Hp I think... and thats in an 1850 lb Car... probably a mid 15 second car... the 82 Z is probably high 16's at best.

I'd say the z28 (145 hp 240lbs) if going to kick its a<*>ss

as for your car (107hp 145lbs) itd be a close race. good luck

I guess the only way is to just find out. Me and my friend phoned around for the civic guys number and finally got it. I'm going to race him first, if I lose he'll go against the Z28. I seriously doubt I'll have a chance against the CRX, my car is a lot heavier and we got like the same amount of hp. The only thing I can think that would benefit me is my torque, and the 3.42 gears I have (previous owner installed). I can't even squeel my tires if I punch it lol. I'll post the results tomorrow.

Well as I expected I got my doors blown off. I had him off the start for like a second and then he just screamed past me. We raced up to 70, he had me beat so bad but he kept going. It was a good thing only a couple of guys came to watch, because it was embarrasing. When we got back he was just laughing, you know that real phony laugh people make just to píss you off, well thats what he did. Anyways I park my car and watch him try the Z28. I could hear both cars squeel and their tires and the Z had him by like 2-3 car lengths. Then the little civic started to gain and I knew it was over. Hopefully by summer time I'll be the first to get my hands on him. I'll be driving a '91 Z28 with the LB9 and 5 speed.

Its 2,017lbs. But really, I think your car needs some work or something, I know it has alot of miles but still look at that cars specs.

I'm not surprised at all that the civic took the Z. The only thing that 305 has, is torque. and it runs outa breath after 1st gear, I would have predicted that the Z would get it out of the hole but lose on the topend.
the 82 Z28 represents the camaro's slowest year in terms of V8's. the magazines got high 16's to low 17's out of the HO 305, the Lg4.. even slower

with the civics 1000lbs+ advantage, the 82 would need to be modded, or at the very least have a 5speed in order take him.

Consider the phrase: "for every 300 Lbs you remove it is like adding 40 Hp"

Now lets be conservative and say it's only 10 Hp per 100 Lbs...

3200 (approx weight of camaro) - 2000 (approx weght of CRX) = 1200/100 = 12 * 10 = 120 Hp

120 + 105 = 225 Hp

So that CRX is about equivelent to a 305 TPI... now there are other factors which it can't make up like torque... so he has to rev a lot higher between shifts.

My last car was an '85 CRX and it only weighed 1750 Lbs (I did have it weighed)... with 76 Hp it still got me to 60 MPH in 10 seconds and it could take that little car up to 105 MPH... Although most of the CRX owners out there seem to be all show and no go, if they just spent a little money under the hood, they could make those ****'s scream.

Don't forget that for every 100 lbs. it's about 1/10 off the 1/4 mile.

How about this:

Instead of using drag racing "formulas" and "rules of thumb", how about just calculating the power/weight ratio of each vehicle as accurately as you can, and just comparing THOSE?

No way, check any book or whatever--it's 50 hp per 200 lbs.

My car is in good tune, new tranny, new cap/rotor/,new plugs, new plug wires, and the previous owner of my car had put 3.42 gears in the rear. My car has no real mods, just k&n and 2.5" exhaust. His car probably makes the same horsepower as me but his car is real small/light. When we took off it was neck and neck and I figured it was going to be a good race until he started to pull real hard past me. Btw, I drive the 84 berli, not the 82 Z28.

I know, its funny. The sad thing is that the LG4 lost! When those things are stock and have some miles on em, they give us 305 guys a bad name. I'd like to show that guy what a real 305 can do.

peace

I think some of you should get out more and drive a really small car like that. Hp isn't everything, when I had my CRX it was one of the lightest cars out there. It was in fact lighter than a Geo Metro, it was so light infact that I had to give trucks an extra wide girth so that I wouldn't be blown all over the road.

Reminds me of a funny story... when I bought that car the plastic piece with the H emblem on it was broken and glued then taped with duct tape. One day I was driving down the highway and a big truck drives by and the entire piece flew off, landing on the highway. I pulled over and backed up on the shoulder and got out, then some *** drives by in a big extended cab p/u and shatters it into a million little bits... he had a good 500 feet to avoid it. Then I could seriously ask the question: "you want a piece of my car?" Those were good times.

Chillphatcat,
I used to drive a 83 RX-7, and I dont think they make cars much smaller. I didnt like it (and feared death by accident), so I got my thirdgen. As a side note, I think the CRX is possibly the worst looking car I have ever seen, and only looks worse after the rice goodies. It is just plain entertaining to beat these guys all day long

Don't feel bad you LG4 guys. I assure you his car was bagged every mile out of those 170,000. The civic was obviously modded, there was already a few goodies on it when that punk got it.

Let me tell you guys a little secret, the kid who drives the 82 Z28 can't drive for crap. I bet if he drove the civic himself he would lose to my powerful carbed 2.8.
