if its a naturally aspirated one , dont waste your time its a high 16 sec car on a good day , there is a turbo model , usually they run around 15's , my buddy had a n/a 300z and it was a pos , even with only having 65k on it , everthing broke on it , it was an 87

They're pretty heavy cars with small wheels. Don't think they can't handle because they can! The turbo v6 is 300hp, they're fast and get my respect. The na versions are nice cars but I wouldn't waste my money on them. That's like getting a v6 f-body that isn't turbo! It just doesn't make any sence to me.

I had a 1987 300ZX..

I loved that car... it ran great, even with that many miles. Not exactly "fast", but I still loved it.

I think the ones with the hump in the hood had the turbo's? Not sure? I can confirm that the 300's run great even with 175K miles on them! Very well built machine's!

I suppose you could make an older turbo model fast, if you did exhuast work and cranked up the boost. I have driven an older turbo 5 speed, it was kind of fun to drive but not exactly fast. My warning is that parts for older imports are expensive, if you cant find them in junkyards.

no the front end was a bit different, it seemed to have more of a bumper instead of the hood going right out and just dropping off like that...
i dunno

How much is it? I've heard from a lot of people that those generation 300's aren't worth it. If you want something fun try looking for a DSM or a 240SX.

Is this what it looks like?

This is a 1982 280Z Turbo. The difference in the turbo models, body wise, is that there is a open scoop on the hood, while on the N/A version, both hood scoops are louvered. The turbo models got a better 5 speed, if equiped with a stick...kinda rare, and a better (3.90's or 4.10's, can't remember which) rear end gearing. Now, for the 83-89 style...

this is 1984 300ZX, Turbo. The styling differences between it and the N/A one, a small driver's side mounted hood scoop. By the way, these things actually are functional, they route air towards the turbo, keep it cool and what-not. Don't know too much about them, used to have a '86 N/A, it was a fun car, even with a auto. These cars were mainly made for handling, with the top speed push being a secondary conideration.

If you're really insane, check out this one...

This is Scottie from www.hybridz.org well, his car at least. It's a 71 Datsun 240, with a buick Gn drivetrain. If ya guys think the wing and the big exhaust poking out the back make him a *****...well, last time I talked to him, his best time was 11.10 @ 121.44 mpg with a 1.63 60' time. I hear a small block fits into the older Z cars quite nicely, and a company makes EVERYTHING you need for the swap...
