90 Formula vs. 98 GT Vert
90 Formula vs. 98 GT Vert
A friend of a friend of mine has a 98 I think GT convertible. He wants to race me sometime just for fun. He really likes my car, I really like his. Its basically just for sh*ts and giggles. Anyways hes got a K&N and an H pipe with Flowmasters, otherwise stock. I think hes gonna hand me my a$$ but he thinks it will be close cause his is the 4.6 and mine is a little lighter. What do you guys think?

If he has an auto it'll be close. If he has a stick he will win easily unless he loses traction real bad.

I'd say good race but you have the 5 speed edge.
"and doogy 4.6"
ok now i don't wanna start a war here, but why does everyone think 4.6s are slower than 5.0s? They're the exact same power on paper, and the 99+s are WAY more powerful than the 5.0. True the 94+ mustangs are not as fast as fox bodies even though its the same chassis but the 95-94 5.0s were no faster than the 96-98 4.6s. Sorry its been a bad day. Don't mean to seem rude/smartass or anything.

I thought the 4.6s from start to around '97/'98 ran low-mid 15s. They are dogs aren't they. And the fact it's a convertible and maybe an auto. I'd say it will be a very close race.

96-98 GT's are dogs. I think your friend would be lucky to run a 15.50.

Actually the 4.6s had 215hp and the 5.0s had 225hp. The real difference is the torque, and where it is evident in the motor. The 4.6s have less torque and like to rev higher so gears are a really good choice. The 5.0s make torque down low and tend to flatten out at 4500 and are done making power at 5500. The reason the 4.6s get a bad reputation is, stock for stock the pre 99 4.6s were slower than the 5.0s. But they can be made to run hard and take nicely to power adders. Just thought I let you know. Oh Ya I think that it will be a good race between the two, and the Camaro should take him, if he gets the launch.

I work as a lot attendant at a Ford dealership...the 4.6 isn't really a great motor for drag racing, at least not stock. Not a whole lot of bottom end torque. They do nicely on the highway, where you can generally keep your RPMS at a decent level. I can tell ya, a 2001 vert with an auto is, well...quite unexciting. I'll take my 88 GT over one anyday, personally. Better torque curve, IMO.
96-98 4.6L's aren't as slow as everyone thinks. A friend of mine has a stock 97GT automatic. She ran a 15.1 @ 93MPH stock with it....with HER driving it.
Not fast, but not too bad.
But I wouldn't put my money on the Mustang. Those early 4.6's aren't that quick

I've seen 87-93s run that slow but they were probably bad drivers and/or beat to hell cars. I guess i give 4.6s a little extra credit cause a freind of mine has one and its not bad, but he's got cold air, nice tune up parts, full exhaust with off road pipe, 5 speed with steeda shifter and the factory 3.27. Its just so much faster than my weakass car its not even funny.
