Not Fun

Began going through an intersection on the way home from work last night and some ordinary-looking LX 5.0 hatchback slows down and pulls up along side me and wants to go. I was driving my vette that night so i felt pretty bold. I was in the middle of a 1-2 shift when he pulled up so i threw it back in 1st and spun my tires. I take him for a moment when i find out he has a turbo (i could hear it winding up) and he starts pulling on me real hard and by 70 he's almost one and a half car lengths ahead of me. Wish i had a turbo .

How do you figure a 85 Vette will beat a turbocharged LX 5.0?

There are people in Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords that put twin turbos on a LX 5.0, and put it into the tens. Mostly stock, except for the traction goodies, and he ported his heads in his garage.

The 85 Corvette L98 has 230 hp/330 ft-lbs of torque. It weighed 3100 lbs on average.

The LX 5.0 has 225/300 ft-lbs of torque. It weighed 3250 lbs on average.

Not too much of a difference when you look at the two figures. I bet that the Mustang had very minor mods, other than that it was probably STOCK. Since you spun, that gave him the go, and he took you by a carlength or so.

If he had a turbocharger, you would have seen taillights all the way. I'm talking 15 cars or so. Unless he is running conservative boost.

The 302 has a much better EFI setup, and a shorter stroke, so it will make it's peak power much faster as well. That's why I say it was a stock vs. stock race.

I agree..twin turbo 5.0L's are running 11's. Even a supercharged 5.0L would be around 12 seconds (maybe 13's with a 6lb. blower)

Mustangs with sticking radiator fan clutches tend to whistle loud at WOT. I know because mine was sticking and I didn't want t change it because it sounded like a turbo wooosh when i revved it.

Thats what i'm sayin, TT 5.0 with adequate fuel system = 11s easy, mid 12s minimum.

My open el whistles like a turbo, wish i could actually back the noise up with some power. Right now i sure have none, at least up top (see posts in TBI board regarding this)

I'm pretty sure i heard something like a turbo winding up when he hit the gas. Maybe it wasn't a turbo. Who knows. I do know the '85 is damn fast (0-60 in 6 by my reckoning) but i know it'll only run low/mid 14's and he beat me by one and a half car lengths, which means that was no 11 or 12 second car unless he didn't have the throttle all the way open.

Of course it could have been a 2.3L with a turbo... those ran numbers around 215 Hp with a little boost change it could make enough power to just barely beat the vette...

When he let off did you hear a waste gate pop. That is usually an unmistakable sound and would mean he has a turbo. And if he did have a turbo he would have pulled much harder than 1 car.
