85 RS vs. 91 RS
Ok, I have the 91 RS 3.1. No mods.. K&N. My friend has an 85 RS 2.8 with a Flowmaster. We both pulled up side by side on a strip in this abandoned network of roads we all call "The Compound". No houses..no stop signs..no street names..no buildings or signs of life of any sort. Just roads and open area. A friend of mine stood between us and flagged us.. When he yelled 3, we both stomped it. Can you say...SMOKED HIM?? We weren't revving or neutral dropping, or even powerbraking at a start. We both stomped it straight from idle. I had a huge jump on him by then..his car seemed to bog down at launch. From there I kept putting distance on him until around 30 mph. By then, I had about 4 feet between his front end and my bumper. Past 30, neither of us gained any ground. And this guy has a Flowmaster! Although not a good choice for a 6 cyl. The funny part is, he blamed his loss in his cracked exhaust piping...understandable. He repaired the piping, and we raced again..I smoked him just as bad. We've had 3 races now..every single time I dust him. Ohhhh yeaaahhh...it feels good. Just wait until I race another friend of mine.. '65 Mustang with a 289. Ouch.. Just gotta wait for him to replace a bad wheel bearing.

My bad..maybe it's not an 85. I do know it's somewhere between 84 and 87.. He keeps telling me, but my forgetful @$$.. It might be an RS, or it might just be a base Camaro. What I DO know is that it's a 2.8 multi-port.

Alright then.. I just probably made up the RS crap in my head. I know the car has the older-style Camaro badge right in front of the door on both sides, and it has the dual snorkel intake.

Yeah, he doesn't have power steering. Right now, he has the stock 2 barrel carburetor on it, but with an intake manifold made for a 4 barrel.. He put an adapter on it. Something's broken in the 4 barrel carb he has laying in his garage, so he hasn't installed it yet.

The RS was reintroduced back in '87 in california only and only came with v6... became available with v6 and v8 in '88 available in the other 49 states. IROC was introduced in '85... the simple truth, no way around it.

Ok, I gotcha. I haven't done my research..obviously. Know of a good website with year-specific Camaro info? All I know is the basics.

I meant besides message boards. I'm looking for a neat, organized timeline here..not random information scattered throughout 100 posts..it'd take me years to read all those.
https://www.thirdgen.org/
this one , look at the tech sections , theres alot more to this site than just the message boards , click on tech data , its under "tech central"

Woah..sweet. Never even noticed there's so much on this site..I always jumped past the main page straight to the boards. Thanks. Good stuff. Jesus..I can't believe the 5.0 TBI gets 255 ft-lbs at 2400...that's too much for only 170 horses. And I thought I had a nice torque jump on the little 3.1 6 cyl!

Yeah..that is sad, but the fact that the climb from 170 hp to 255 ft-lbs is such a huge one. I only have 40 more ft-lbs of torque than I do horses. I've never heard of an 85 ft-lb jump like that..not on a sh*tty stock car like the TBI 5.0. I'm looking for a V-8 as I speak, since I'm selling my 3.1...but I know for sure there's no way I'm ever buying a TBI v-8..not worth it.

Alright, I have a question..a little education for the mostly uneducated. Why is it so terrible to make your peak torque at 2400? I know it's way out of whack from what it should be..but what are the major disadvantages? Does it have a real nasty fall-off above 2400?

Torque is what actually moves your car. And if your torque peaks at such a low rpm, then when you get into higher rpm's do to accelerating then you're not in your peak torque range for power.

Ah, alright.. So basically, the acceleration and power really sucks above that 2400, which is pretty much ALWAYS when you actually need it. Thanks..I had the feeling that was the bad side..

I really really shoulda came to this board and read up more before i bought mine, I agree. I know a L03 can be made fast but it isn't cheap. The low end pushes it around town real nice but it won't win any races. It does get nice MPG though. It just can't breathe at all once you wind it up so it makes no real HP. But its NOT because of the TBI like people seem to think, its the crappy heads with half the ports blocked off and cam with lobes smaller than my freaking knuckles... ok maybe thats a stretch but you get my point.

Yeah..definitely. It's funny.. This guy at my school owns a V-8 5.0 RS..don't know what year, but he got it for real cheap. He drives it around with a big ego about it, cutting in front of people and showing it off like "look at my big powerful V-8".. Everytime I see him, I just think "ha..he's stuck with that TBI piece of junk..a few mods and I can beat him." No offense to the TBI, I just don't like the guy..so I'm talking trash about his car.
