A good running G92 L98 would be close to them. A mildly modded 1 should be able to beat that car if it was stock.

I for one have had a run with with a 2001 GT and he did win. I didn't mind to much because he suckered me off the line. You know the guys that dont want to race untill the other car is already pulling out from the light. (normaly) So here I was with a damn stang like 4 car lengths on me. Well the good news is I made up two car lengths untill we hit the topend then I started to loose them. My car is a 90 Iroc (G92) with a 305, 5 speed. I hope this anwers your question.
I have an L98 in my transam and one of my friends moms has an 99 GT. that is a super slow car!! she even took it to about 5000rpm, I know my car could beat that anyday. I know your tlaking about the new ones but theres a comparison of the older ones to an L98

Please tell me how a 14.5 second L98 (and thats the fastest ones) will beat a 14.0 second 99+ Mustang GT?? Unless the Mustang has a crappy driver, you're going to lose. Thats the facts, sorry to say.

That would be because the 1's that run 14.5 are not the fastest. There are many factory L98 cars that run faster than that stock, low-very low 14's.
exactly the some mustangs are slower, like I said I rode ina 99' that was slow as hell. I know I could beat it, she was manualy shifting at about 5000rpm(which isn't that high) and I shift at about 5000rpm or soo too.

I have no problem keeping up my car has beat a few and lost to a few but when in stock form they get a spanking. Im runnin a 92 tuned port injected 305 with a 5 speed. best combination if you ask me. but then again i have beaten a 97 SS camaro and a 99 ss. and my car isnt even that fast but there are alot of crappy drivers out there. if you are illeterate get an auto.

notice the she part in that story thats why your car "would" beat it the girl you where riding with cant drive. just because the girl is a slow shifter when your riding in it dosnt mean your car will beat it
she wasn't a slow shifter. she's a really good driver, she shifts right when you should. trust me mustangs gt are slow!! the cobras diffent story, but the gts are slow all that there is to it
Well my 91 Z28 350 car went 14.24 bone stock in 95 degree weather
when it was new in 91, so I think a low miler z28 350 could hang with a new stang. A few mods later my car went a best of 13.11 with out any nos are blower
) It went 13.79 2 months ago and it it has 147,000 miles on it now

) The reason they were outselling them almost every year is simple
1..Ford will finance easier than chevy...that is a fact
2..the same rice crowd/hip-hop guys-love mustangs
3.Look at the price/performance difference

I, for one, would never buy a Mustang. Have you ever sat in one?
Doesn't feel like a sports car to me.
I was playing around in a friends 2001 Cobra the other night, nice power, but no torque. My 86 T/A has more torque than it.
It also felt strange shifting at 7K, I am so used to shifting around 5500.

As for why Mustangs outsell Camaros,
1. They cater to the "women" market---more V-6 than GT's
2. They actually advertise
I for one still enjoy beating up on brand new $30,000 "muscle cars" with my 13 year old 100,000 mile IROC.

I love reading posts like this on this board, too funny.
You arent going to get a truthful answer here, thats how it works. Drivers of these cars will not admit their enemy is faster. Go to any Mustang board and tell me they admit to losing to F-bodies. Not gonna happen. I also like how someone quotes what is probably the worst ET I have seen yet for a GT, and I wouldnt be surprised if in the same breath that person would quote the absolute best ET for the Z28.
In reality, what Kevin said is closest to accurate. Given 2 cars running at their proper potential (ie: not a ringer, and not one of the worst to exit the door either) and driven to their potential, the GT is going to win. Sorry. However, there are a million possibilities that could allow you to win, like your car is modded, theirs is in need of repair, they cant drive, you get the jump, whatever. At worst, you are only talking about 1/2 of a second in 1/4mile difference and that can easily be made up in tire smoke or a slightly different reaction time. I beat a LS1 at the track with my 15.5 second TA, so dont dismiss it until the guy you are running misses a gear and loses the race.

Madmax, I will agree that stock for stock the new Mustang should beat a 10 year old Camaro.
I don't mind giving props to someone if they beat me, however I've been to the track quite a bit and don't recall seeing any new Mustang's even break into the 13's.

A lightly modded L98 should run with a stock '01 mustang. The L98 usually pulls a 97-98 mph trap speed while a newer mustang will pull around a 97-101 depending on auto or manual.
Viewing times is pointless, as that is heavily based on traction and driver. An auto '01 mustang and a L98 will run very very close. The manual '01 mustang should win everytime if the driver can drive.
As for the cobra being slow... that's a foolish remark. They are dynoing 270-290 to the rear and running 13.1s at 106-108.
Only 10-20 hp lower than the new LS1s. You consider them slow as well?

I smoked a 2001 Cobra just yesterday and my tranny is screwed up. The new stangs are slow even the Cobra.

My car is far from stock (many on this board are faster than me for the same or less cost) but for a total investment of under 10K I did have him by 2 cars without nitrous to me that makes them slow.
all of you saying that you have "drove a new mustang gt" and are saying its slow mustve done something wrong. i drove a '00 gt with a 5 speed, and that thing would bark tires in 2nt and 3rd, and when i was driving it, we raced a early 90s 5.0 stang and we stomped the **** out it. but for the price, id much rather buy an iroc and mod it up. youd be able to beat the mustang for about a third of the cost. plus you cant tell me a new rectangular stang looks better than this

I think that it comes down to the driver. I have a friend that has a 2000 gt 5-speed, and when I race him with him driving I win some and he wins some, but usually we can't pull on each other.
But when someone else is driving his car and we race, I smoke it every time. So if someone knows how to drive, it will be a very close race.

My best friend has a 2000 GT stang, I have a 90 350 iroc and 2000 ws6. Both of my rides beat it. My roc is my baby, She beats him 3+ car lengths, but she is decently modded, but he put a paxton on it a week ago and we haven't had a chance to see IT AGAINST my bird and roc. He was really tired of being spanked by a quarter mile in a quarter mile race. The good thing about the new 4.6s is they can be supercharged out the box, but nothing beats a F-body. He finally took my advice not bringing a knive to a gunfight. So watchout out for him.2000White GT VA plates BZZZZZ. Mine on my red roc is DAA MAN and whitebird LIONZA

I know that a lot of mustang guys think that they need to rev the stang to 5000 and slowly le off the clutch when they race. watch next time usually you are already so far ahead by the time they stop the clutch from slipping by finally releasing the clutch or they let it all out quick and spin and spin. then for both of above they claim they have soo much torque they are at a disadvantage. and you just hooked right up

When I bought my GTA and took it home there was a timeslip under the seat and it said the car ran a 14.1x. I dont know if it had any mods or not but I sure haven't noticed where it's been modded in any way. Pretty good for a heavy GTA. I doubt it would go high 14's now though, getting sick with age.
I've ridden in a new GT and I wasn't impressed. And the seats hurt my @ss too. And even if they ARE faster than us, we still have it better than them in every other way: ride, handling, mileage, comfort, LOOKS (definately
) and best of all quality. Fords are not high quality cars. That's a fact, it always has been. Even from day one, Henry Ford said "Hey! Let's build a car for cheap, with cheap parts, on an assembly line, and lets sell them for a bigger profit!" They have been making low quality cars since.
DO NOT SEND HATE MAIL PLEASE!

There is a guy arround here that runs 12.80-12.90s on the motor it is a 5-speed car. He has full exhaust and cold air. I think that is a pretty respectiable time. I think he was running 13.70s in stock form. I don't know of a stock third gen that will run 13.70s stock.
Now the auto cars I have seen them run 14.70s stock. I drove one a while back and it was the slowest thing I have ever dirven literally. Most strong thirdgens in stock form with a good drivers could walk all over a stock mustang with a auto.
I forgot to say that the car is a 2001 gt.

yeah i have heard the auto gt's are dogs. the 5 speed gt i drove was pretty cool, it was some kind of special edition silver mustang, with black and silver leather(like) seats, all kinds of shiney silver accents in the interior trim, a chrome ball shift ****, silver gauges, and black carpet. the way the black and silver theme was done, it definately made it one of the coolest interiors i have ever seen in my life. plus the thing had a little kick to it. im sure it wouldve walked all over most stock L98 fbodys. it wouldve been a good run with a L98 vette.
hey guys
this is where I'm going to get some s*** from everyone I know but here gos, I bought a 89 stang as a joke "winter beater" seriously for the winter, mods on the car were k&n filter, 3:73, exhaust front to back, no cats, and roller rockers. 187000k I also belive the car was driven hard from day one it smoked a bit and ran rich. The joke was on me I had just stumbled upon the best car ive owned aside from my Zed. This car was real quick Im thinking around 13:60 thats with the rears ablaze, it was quicker than my cousins ILE "still pis**d he did sell me the car!" anyways his was a 13:90-14:00 car. Almost forgot what my point was
it cost me 3grand and thats CAD money about 10 bucks U.S.
for the money you cant beat stangs there cheap and quick, thats why they partly outsold the ZEDs, they were also lighter they had and probalbly still have more aftermarket items for them(efi) wise. If i were given the chance to buy another i probably would but then id have to ask the question do i want a street rocket or a comfortalble perfect handling and styled ILE (airconditioned ofcourse) loud tunes and dont forget quick then my answer were to the Zed obviously however if i want quick then id still pick my 9sec ZED who wouldnt
but seriously guys you got to admit there the biggest bang for the buck and not to bad in the snow

My opinion is this: A stock 91 or 92 Z28 with a L98 that runs good will be a good race with a stock 99+ Mustang Gt's. My 2 good friends have a 99 and a 2000 Gt mustangs and they both got the same Times stock ( 14.1's and 14.2's at 98 and 99 Mph ) as I did stock. So I think they are a good race, depends alot on driver for the mustang cause they have five speeds, and the Third gen depends alot on the car cause are cars are older with alot more miles. But to end I now have more mods than them( but not by much ) and I spank them when I have slicks on and a good race in street form but I usually win
New Mustangs ugly??
Whoa! I gotta say I disagree here. When I was first
getting into cars I was infatuated with the 98andup
body design. My dream was always a third gen and
yes third gens DO look BETTER than the new stangs.
BUT, they look a whole lot better than 93-97 fourth gens.
WHICH IS THE REAL REASON THEY WERE OUTSELLING
CAMARO!!!!!

A new Mustang GT should be able to win, the older 94-99(?) were pretty damn slow tho. And the Stangs sell better because they're cheaper, cheaper usually has more appeal. Otherwise GM would have never sold a single J-Body, lol
First of all-- a new Mustang stock with exhaust running 12.90's Hahahahahaha! That's a good one.
While I was not impressed initially with the look of the '98 up Fbody it has really grown on me. And this is a car that can go 12.90's with a few boltons, unlike the newer Rustang.
Jester, I have to corect you--the thirdgen were outselling the fox body's for a few years even though those mustangs could go quick. The later generation Rustangs were built to appeal to the masses(good looks but pitiful performance).
I don't know why I keep posting on this thread, maybe it has something to do with the amount of alcohol that is being consumed.
Long live the thirdgen!!!
Bob

Also, the best power for the dollar car has always been the F-Body between the 2 and still is. Actually, the best everything for the dollar has always been the F-Body in all around performance.

now why would you say something like that? by reducing some weight in the valvetrain you are going to free up some power, also you should allow the motor to rev a little higher b/c of less weight
ask me I would think it is a lot better design
though it has a little more cost in doing so or more ppl I think would use it
Yeah sure it lessens the weight on the valvetrain and lets the engine rev higher, but the Over head valve designs gives a much stronger, broader torque curve. The dyno results say all and if you dont believe me, go phone the engineers at SLP and they'll tell you all about why OHV is better than OHC, especially when drag racing.

with the lighter valvetrain you can run a more aggresive cam profile without having the vavles float. having a much faster ramp to open up the vavle will make the torque curve a lot fatter and higher then one with a more shallow valve opening, when all other things are equal as in lift as well as duration.
also with a lighter valvtrain you are going to not have as much parasitic loss. sure might not seem like much but the speeds at which a motor moves can make quite a difference. also being that there is more moving parts you are going to create more friction.
and if you set it up with a DOHC you are going to have less valve shrouding. if you can get more area from that valve open you are going to make for much better airflow patterns which in turn is going to up the boost power.
why is it that ford would put a OVC setup on there cobra. the car that is a step up from the GT and instead put something that is from what you say better (pushrod) on a car that is not so great?
also if the OHV as you say would make a much bigger and stronger powerband why is it that some big ppl like ferarri, lambo, BMW, porsche, jaguar, mercedes-benz and so forth would use a cam design that is not as great?
the reason I think it has not reached a lot of use is due to cost on a v8 setup that would mean 2/4 cams which is going to make production cost more. and with how you have to replace timing belts more often with with a pushrod setup you are going to have more cost in trying to maintain the car
sorry just bitchy mood so I rant

Fine believe whatever you want.
why is it that ford would put a OVC setup on there cobra. the car that is a step up from the GT and instead put something that is from what you say better (pushrod) on a car that is not so great?
also if the OHV as you say would make a much bigger and stronger powerband why is it that some big ppl like ferarri, lambo, BMW, porsche, jaguar, mercedes-benz and so forth would use a cam design that is not as great?

your mistaken the M5 also will use a overhead cam
almost all if not all of the cars I listed above use a OHC/DOHC
and I would dare say that most of them have motors that are far better technologically then that in the Z06. now granted the Z06 has a great motor but.. I wouldn't say that they have the most advanced
and check out the things I said you should find some truth to them if you look it up.
the only ppl I know of who use a pushrod setup are the three major domestics Dodge, ford, in there v8 and v6 setups
though I think each played with OHC in there v motors
the vette at one time even had a DOHC setup in the ZR-1
