If you had a 1/4 mile race between any 3rd gen fbod and an LS1 powered fbod and had to do a cam change first which one would win? I think the LS1 would lose because it would take longer to change the cam. In another thread about buying an LS1 someone told me that you could change the cam on an LS1 engine without pulling the heads. The thread got closed so I didn't get to answer, but anyone should know that you can change the cam in any engine without pulling the head or heads. So I think he was trying to say an LS1 is easier to work on and I believe it is not. You can't even see but a 1/3 of the engine in an LS1 powered fbod. Looks like a nightmare to do much work on.

Actually, the LS1 IS easier to work on, especially for cam changes. You dont even have to remove the intake manifold, because the lifters retract into the valley. I'm going by heresay here tho, I've never actually done it.

Not to bust any bubbles or pick any fights, but any thirdgen with only a cam swap aginst even a stock ls1 would be difficult. You're gonna let the ls1 upgrade too?

Well you would still have to get the valve covers off and back off all the rocker arms as well as pull off all the accessories and timing cover etc. And if any problem arose you would need to pull the intake. Mainly just wanted to point out that no engine needs a head pull to change a cam. However why would you want to change cams unless going to more lift, duration? In which case you would want to pull a head to check valve clearance. And then you would be wishing that LS1 engine was in a 3rd gen where you could get to it. SlowV8berlinetta I wasn't saying the 3rd gen would be slower just that the cam change might take longer on the LS1. No need to change cams in an LS1 anyway.

If you're gonna invent a race like that, I'd put a 1.0L 3Cyl metro ahead of both of them LOL...

Why change the cam in a LS1 anyway? Just add some 1.8 rockers.

i thought in order to work on an ls1 you have to drop the k frame under the car then pull the motor from the underside. thats not "easy" if you ask me. i dont car what cam you put in a stock 3rd gen its still gonna lose to an ls1.

Matt 87 you didn't understand the race. It is a race to change the camshaft and then run a 1/4 mile. The third gen would change cams, race and be sitting at home before the LS1 finished the cam change, if the cam change takes longer. It is really a race to change cams. Yes ChillPhillCat the metro would win hands down!
