DSM's

I got a couple of questions to ask about DSM's. I know this kid that likes to run his mouth. He has a 95 GST I know those run around 15-flat stock. He has like a intkae tube and maybe a boost controller I am not sure on that. HOw much fster would the boost controller make him? what do you think he will run in the 1/4 mile? Its a 5-speed by the way.

Low 14's ? I know the boost controllers are simple mods and produce a huge gain.

A kid in town has a 1995 Talon TSi AWD Turbo 5-speed, Dead stock with 92,000 miles it ran a 15.4 With a boost controller and a cat back it went 14.8. Also this kid sucks at driving.

if its not all-wheel drive then he isn't running a 15 flat, maybe a high 15 low 16, the all wheel drive makes all the difference, the gst is front wheel, the gsx is all wheel. and the newer the model the more it wieghs

A stock GST will run high 14's with a good driver but it is really hard to be consistent with those cars. A powerful FWD car, especially a turbo is quite difficult to launch. The cars have the power to get in the 14's but have difficulty hooking up. My friend ran a 14 flat with nothing but a homemade boost control and a KN air filter and I ran a 14.34 but we are AWD. So you can get into the low 14's with a GST with similar mods as I said if you can get traction.

Keep this in mind. I own a 1997 GS-T, so I know the score. Every tiny bit of air in his 4G63 Mitsubishi motor makes a huge difference. I also have a boost controller (and a lot of other stuff), but let me tell you... be careful when racing these cars! They are NOT a honda or just an average import. Turning up the boost is very effective on these motors. Find out how much PSI he is running before you race him. If he is running a stock turbo, don't worry too much, it runs out of good boost at 5,000 RPMs (redline at 7k and ends at 9k). Here's the deal. The stock second generation DSM (95-99) has a T-25 turbo. Which is built by Garret and designed for response not HP. Here's another thing. If his BOV ( Blow off valve) is stock, it will leak at 13 PSI and his boost will go no higher regardless of how he has set his boost controller. Also, this will put the turbo out of it's efficiency range and hence, be very slow. Also, if he keeps running his mouth, remind him that the 4G63 has a little problem called crankwalk. Which VERY expensive to fix, and will just come back in time even when "fixed". Either way... you win! And all-wheel drive doesn't always mean better. It just means better ET's. Therefore, it will have a much lower trap speed than a FWD. It has a better launch... yes. However, the FWD has a much harder pull. If you race an AWD from a roll it's slower than a FWD. FWD only has two wheels for all that power vs. what it takes to move four. For more information on DSMs go to www.dsmtalk.com Hope I was able to help.

I know his blow off valve isn't stock because I can hear it when he shifts.

Well, just because you can hear it, doesn't mean it's aftermarket. If you hear the ppsssshhht and it's not very loud. It's probably stock. If you hear whhhooooosshshh at amazing DBs... it's aftermarket. I hope you can tell what I'm trying to say.

If you have a 406 it should be a pretty good race.

then you must have raced a car that wasn't in great tune and the person couldn't drive cause a proper running 5 speed talon or eclipse turbo in most cases=one dead 305. They're not some honda as said before. Ad a little boost and they really start to move. A guy I used to work with had a 94 or so GST and he had bone stock timeslips for that car which were consistent 15.0's and once he did some minimal mods he was seeing 13's all day long.
