Do they ever learn...

Me and me friends went street racing lastnight, well, tried noone ever showed. Well, we decided to go home b/c it was obvious nothing was going to happen. An early to mid 90's eclipse pulls up next to me and holds my speed. My thoughts of course were, " You're kidding right?" Oh no, he was serious. Well I beat him three times at a roll down 7th, and I could hear the turbo. It must have been stock. Well anyway, as if the first three times weren't enough, we pulled to a light to turn on to Rangeline. So now I am at least in first which is my best gear. We turn the corner and he punches it, so I hold it to the floor and just destroyed him this time. I didn't even get halfway through second gear it was so bad. But, again I could hear the turbo. I guess it was just stock? He should have killed me otherwise, especially at a roll. Notice my gears in my sig.

Same here, when I get my cam swap done, I should be on the 14.0 border some where.
I know of 2 Turbo Eclispes around here that run mid-low 13s, not too bad I guess, faster than me.

2.77?

Are you sure you have a 2.77?? My friend has an 88 IROC and he thought he had a 2.77 but there is a tag on the rearend that says 3.27. Might want to check that out.

I am working on getting a rearend with 3.70 gears right now. I am praying that I can pull it off. I think with my drag radials I could probably run 13.70's with 3.70 gears. What do you think?

Trust me, they are 2.77's. I beat a car at the track that destroyed me on the street at a roll. He had 3.55's. And don't you mean lower gears MattW?

i've heard that the easiest way to seeing what kind of gears you have is to put the car in D.....aka drive....and go 70mph....and that will tell you your gear ratio times 1000.....like if you had 3.73 like me you would b running a little over 3500 RPM's

that didn't work for me. i know i have 3.08 gears because i have a stick and i went 70 with my car in 4th (my 1:1 gear) and i was showing 2730 rpms which says i have 2.73 gears.
the only real way to tell is to jack your car up, put it in neutral, mark where your tires are at and spin the driveshaft and count how many times the driveshaft turns for one revoultion for the wheel. thats a sure fire way to know what your gear ratio is. now you can't tell between 3.42 or 3.45 or something close like that but you can tell a difference between 2.73, 3.08, 3.23, etc.

You could run RPO codes of course if it is the original diff.

Early 90's eclipses, even with turbos arent that fast, only low 15 sec 1/4mi stock and 7+ticks 0-60

And another thing, shorter gear ratios arent always better and the differences are very small, sometimes less than a 1/10 of a sec different. And with smaller gears your shifting sooner, and that takes up time as well.
I thought that was funny that one person was running 14.0 and is hoping for 13.7 just switching to 3.73's.....

lower gears will help you in dragracing because you get more bit as we call it but the lower your rear end gears are the more they kill you in the high end 60+ mph two cars with the same everthing (driver, motor, tranny, tires) one with 4.10 gears will when the other car with 2.73 gears in a drag race no matter what. now the car with 2.73 gears will win in a top speed race against the car with 4.10 gears because they are not ment for high end.

very well possable depending on what they had before.....

BadBowtie88:"Trust me, they are 2.77's.

i have never even heard of those gears now 2.73,3.23,3.42,3.73. i have heard you might want to check up on that size.

and also 3.27s what is that i mean i have heard of the motor 327 but never gears 3.27. i mean damm what kind of rear ends you guys got???????????????

Gears could take well over 3 tenths off. My dads stang with 2.73s went 14.89 and then he added gears and went 14.42. Thats with no other mods. I think gears are probably the best bang for the buck mod out there. Especially in an automatic!!!

"two cars with the same everthing (driver, motor, tranny, tires) one with 4.10 gears will when the other car with 2.73 gears in a drag race no matter what"

Nobody ever races with the same exact car and setup, except for different gears. And youd also have to include two different drivers with the same exact shifting and timing patterns in this test.
My point is, I wouldnt be scared of racing a car with 3.70's or 4.10s and mine had 2.70's, the difference is not very much.
And shorter gears only gain you a slightly better acceleration only if you keep the tires from slipping which is more likely to happen with the shorter ones.

Ok, lets clear it up! Gears, as long as you don't lose tooooo much traction, will almost always improve your E.T.'s. I say almost, because you have to decide which gears will keep your car within it's powerband. Stock gears aren't meant to keep most stock cars within their powerbands. Lower (numerically ) gears are used in OEM applications for LONGEVITY, and SAFETY. Just think, what if some idiot who bought a third-gen camaro with STOCK tires and 4.10s decided to nail a 3-2 downshift at 45 miles and hour....in a 90 degree corner.... And higher (again, numerically) gears keep an engines RPM in a higher range longer, so engine longevity is compromised. Now, tossing in a set of gears that will keep your engine in it's power band, as opposed to stockers, which will generally drop you out of your powerband on shifts, will lower your E.T.s, period, so long as you choose your gears wisely.....just my .02

i know it not possble to have the same everthing in a car except gears i know that for a fact and i know not everone races with the same thing as everyone else does. if they did it would be no fun to race. my point was that lower rear gears will lower your ets no matter what and in drag racing its harder then hell to win with higher gears. because in drag racing alot of the race depends on who gets out of the hole the quickest. no iam not saying who ever leaves frist will win i know better then that. i have been draging for 2 years now. in drag you only have to run 1/4 mile so you usally bulid your car for the low end and not the high end because you use more low end then you do your high end. now if i wanted to set a speed record then yes i would use the highest possb. gears i could find. the point is that lower gears do help save time off your E.T.s and i agree they are one of the best bang for your bucks out there.

First of all, Ghour_Demon: If you think I'm not going to pick up at least .3 off my 1\4 time with gears only you are crazy. Especially with having sticky tires. I am pulling 2.07 60' times as it is! And yes they did make 2.77 rear end gears for the 9 bolt rear end and automatic transmission. I have researched this a hundred times.

Second of all, 85maro: What is your e-mail address? We will have to hook em up in Joplin sometime. I had no idea you lived in Monett. Let me know. Also, what do you have done?
