i am new to posting but have been reading on the mesage boards for a while so please bear w/ me. anyway this is sorta off the street racing subject but im 15 and im starting to look for a car. i was at a carshow last night and saw a s-10(first bodystyle shortbed standard cab) that was painted all bright orangeand i mean all, grill, bumpers, everything! i realy liked how it looked. it had crager dragstars, skinnys up front, huge fatties in the rear, and it sounded awesome when he fired it up. im having a hard time deciding if i want to get a camaro and make it fast or get a s-10 and make it fast. money is a huge thing so whick do think will be cheaper to make realy fast? the s-10 has on major up side for it with me and that is i hunt ALOT and unfortunaltly u cant haul aroung deer in the back of a camaro.i like the looks of a third gen and a s-10 about the same. and i want something realy fast for teh least amount of money availble. one reason i need fast is cause my spoiled rich friend has a honda prelude his mommy and daddy bought him and it he could beat me i would never hear the end of it adn pluse i hate fourcylinders adn would prolly kill myself if he beat me. one more thing, between my dad, grandpa, brother, and myself we can do aobut anythign car related ourselves. thanks for all your replies

To be honest, with your needs, I would say go for an S-10, BUT, I'm not sure how much work is involved in swapping motors into them or if you have the know how or tools. In that case, it might be best to buy a 350 IROC which should be cheaper to be faster.
I would assume S-10s are lighter than our Camaros, but could be wrong.
I know what you mean by storage area, I can't fit everything I need for college when I first take everything and have to have some stuff put into another car.

thks for your reply. onthe subject of having th e know how or tools to swap an 350 in to a s-10 isnt all that hard they even have kits taht have all the new motor mounts that aculay bolt to the origonal mounts. my uncle has acculay dont the swap about 4 times so if we have any questions at all then we can ask him. as far as tool go my grandpa has a decent size shop that he has 2 welders, a torch, adn all the tools you could ever ask for so tools is not a problem. the engine i will swap in a s-10 if i get on would be a 350(weve built 3 in the last 2 years so thats no problem at all) thamks

You might get some better/more responses on the TECH/Engine board.

THERE'S WAY MORE TO LIFE THAN FAST CARS, AND IF A PRELUDE BEATS YOU, SO WHAT, LIFE GOES ON, BUT MAYBE NOT FOR YOU SINCE YOU SAID YOUR GOING TO KILL YOURSELF.
S-10'S USUALLY WEIGH MORE THAN A Z28, ESPECIALLY IF YOU DROP 8 CYLINDERS INTO ONE. ONLY THE 2 DOOR FOUR BANGERS PICKUPS ARE LIGHTER

thanks for the info about the v8 s10 being heavier than a camaro. aobut the me killing myself it was just a joke cause i make fun of y friends car all teh time cause its a four cylinder, i would never even think aobut killing myself thats jsut stupid cause if he beat me i would just take a loan from the bank and go buy a crate 454 hehe. but the thing i would kinda wanna know more about everyone eslses opion about what they would do if in my spot but the tech nuber s are still good tho. my cousin told me that one bad thing about the s10s were that is was realy hard to get them to hook up good. keep em coming.

I really doubt the S-10 V-8 is heavier. My 95 SS has a 4.3 which shouldn't weigh much more than a 350. And my truck weighs quite a bit less than a loaded 3rd gen. No flame but it does.

depends what years your comparing them to, and the S-10 is a brick compared to an F-body, which means even slower acceleration the higher you climb the speedometer compared to an F-Body. Weight isnt much of a factor compared to aerodynamics when running past hiway speeds,
but if all you do is run from 0 - 40 mph and back off after that, then who needs a streamlined shape.

Simple fact to consider, buying an S10 and a 350 3rd gen camaro will land you probably similar price tags in nice shape (as any used car would). You're not gonna be getting an S10 with a 350 stock... whereas a camaro will come with it stock... you will thus need to swap in a 350 which will for obvious reasons cost more in total. So, the camaro will be cheaper to go quicker. I would bet either one beats a stock (even with I/H/E) prelude.
One other thing, specs on a 2002 prelude:
200 Hp
150 Tq
3000 lbs (plus or minus 50 lbs)
They ran 15.7 in the 1/4 by Car and Driver, they should pose an idle threat to a G92 powered Camaro which should be good for an easy mid 14.

My guess (Non VTEC, not sure if they were made then), would be a low 16.
Those newest preludes are pretty quick, If Im not mistaken I think the newest ones, top model, push over 200 hp
thats what I was told by a friend buying a prelude crate motor for a civic so I dunno, 200hp in an import and be pretty potent
but I may be wrong on my number
EDIT: Ignore me, I just read the last few posts I must have skipped, someone allready said this, (I guess my numbers where rite) and its a 95 not '02

My registration says S-10 weighs 3500 pounds. I'm sure you can make it go fast, but it wont stop or corner like an F body. Anybody have any thoughts on this guy getting a small utility trailer to haul is hunting stuff? I can't remember if I've ever seen a third-gen with a hitch!

Just make sure you have a v8 in the s10. I've never had any trouble out of any 4 or 6 cylinder trucks, ever, in any car I've driven. Altho...
It has occurred to me that the 2.5 probably has more potential than a 2.8. But it's still going to sound like an amplified moth. Of course we're talking v8s.
Traction will be a bigger problem 4 a nose heavy truck wouldn't it? Wouldn't handling be a problem?
Think what you need is an El Camino.

Keep in mind the importance of this: the highschool GETTING LAID FACTOR. Sure, you COULD haul around dead animal carcass in the back of an S10, (probably fairly quick with a 350, too...), but when the ladies' ask "What's that smell/stain/animal head?" it's pretty much all over....I say get the Camaro. Classic teenager car, looks good, tons of fun, and has a "SCORREEE!!" factor ranging from 7/10 - 9/10, depending on your suaveness and her intoxication. Hell, I know which 'dear' I'd rather bag....

i dunno .. i got both a s10 and a camaro and the s10 gets way more looks from chicks (but not a fair comparison since the camaro is stock) ... one time I was driving the Waikiki strip and 4 hot chicks walking down the side of the street full on stopped and gawked at my truck when I was rolling by ... I was laughing so hard!
