it was me and a older looking guy in a Navigator at the stop light. The first person ahead would get the advantage becasue the 2 lanes merged into one lane ahead do i knew this guy wanted to be the first. So the light turns green and we are neck and neck for the first 6 seconds, actually my nose was like 3 inches ahead, any ways i figure i would have the lead but the navigator flies by me in the next second.......

Wow, those things are slow, at least the one my friend has, then again I don't think he ever floored it, but their huge. I feel your pain.

You've gotta be prepared for these kinda things when you're wielding a v6 to fight the competition.

Depends on your aspect of slow...
You did very well considering. They have 300 hp, awd or 4wd, and their 0-60 time is 7.7 which points to a 1/4 time in the 15s somewhere. Their top end is 110 governed.
You were outmuscled severely. You did well to hang on that long.
good work.:hail:

I didn't really want to race the suv, like i said the two lanes we were in was going to merge into one, i like being the first one so i can drive at my own speed with out any one infront of me. besides now that i look back at it i think Abel is right because my 2.8 cant compare to a suv with around 300 hp and low 0-60 times, i held up pretty good, 6 seconds is a decent time
Man,
I'd punch myself in the face if I lost to a HUGE suv...
Here's what you do. Find a 350 block from a junkyard ($150 or so). Buy summit's $200 rebuild kit. Pick up minor stuff (dist, carb, etc) and swap. Ditch the computer all together.
Then GO FAST

EDIT: or you can buy my '85 and kick some suv @ss

I know how you feel. I used tohave a 82' Berlinetta Camaro with a 2.8L engine. A friend driving a 86' Honda Accord beat me. Totaling that car might have been the beat thing that ever happened to me. I got a 86' Pontiac Fiero also with a 2.8L engine next. I could smoke most early 3rd Gen 305 Camaros with that car so all 2.8L arent too bad.

Don't listen...be original...
Do what you wanna do, but I would keep the 2.8 and mod it as best I could. Correct me if I'm wrong, but generally people who have driven and raced 2.8s constantly usually have a bizarre fixation with them. I used to have a 2.8 89 Corsica. Didn't have it long before I totalled it. But I nailed a modified Excort and 250 72 chevy truck, and lost to a 70 350 El Camino. Topped it around 110. 0-60 in just under 10. Not that fast and I was a horrid driver at the time, but fun. Although I had that car following an 82 Cimarron with a 1.8. 10 seconds to 45. I didn't hate the car tho. But it was difficult and expensive to work on. And slow.
Anyway what's your stats on your camaro? Should be better than my Corsica.

Don't feel two bad:
My neighber has a 4.6 Mustang GT. I installed a Flowmaster exhaust/77 MAF with K&N he also put in 4:10s. My stock 2000 Cherokee was a half car length ahead for a good 500 ft before we had to slow up. I think in the quarter he would win but it was still a humbling lesson for him.
Yes he can drive. He drives an 18 wheeler everyday.
I raced him with my modified 85' Iroc - That was an *** wuppin!

my friend has a 89 bird with the 2.8, and he lost to a 4.0 liter wrangler. theres no shame in that, my neighbor has a cherokee with the sma engine, and those straight 6's can move.
We were playing around on the highway after my gears were done, and i just kept letting him catch up and then gunning it. Lasted for about 3 min until i got sick of waiting for him to catch up anymore.

Dude, don't underestimate navigators and expeditions. I have 2 friends, one has a Expedition w/4.6 and the other has a Navigator w/5.4 - Those ****'s are MEAN when u mash the go pedal, first doesn't end till like 45-50mph. You found out the hard way
hey 86bird i got one word of advice for ya
go get the most agressive cam in the market (atleast teh most agressive one the computer can handle) and put it in ...then port the intake manifold as much as u can when u put the cam in get 1.6 roller rockers and a roller chain....now that;; put some life into ur 2.8
im not asying after all this u can go after v8s but u can beat those SUVs....
but one thing u can be proud even now is that ur car can take corners at much higher speeds than accords, civics .... and those SUvs

irocztwenty who are u to say my car wont beat a civic, cavalier etc, unless u have actually raced them in MY vehicle u would know, but u haven't so thats all
to me, and car is not stock, and i do have plenty of advantages, and i didn't list the minor stuff in my signature like bosch platinum 4 plugs and msd 8mm wires with msd cap & rotor, Like HG stated some suv's are quick like a ****, the navigator has 300+ hp with massive tourque so it wasn't a total loss, your car is nothing if i took the dads t-type out and u wouldn't be laughing so hard would u

custom CAI
MSD ignitor
Hooker cat back
bosch platinum 4 plugs
msd 8mm wires
msd cap & rotor
and an Auto transmission with no mods unless the other person can't drive. How do I know this?? My 89 RS is a 2.8.
Those mods aren't gonna make that much of a difference and get you high 15's-low 16's. I mean, when these cars were tested new, they only got a 17.6 out of a 5-Speed. And I don't think those cars have 0-60's around 10.4sec.'s either. Senior Member

10.4...no...
10.4 is the time to 60 that the consumer guide got out of an auto 4 bbl 305 firebird in 1983. Well, actually 10.9. 150 hp.
I had a 2.8 89 Corsica auto. 130 hp stock. Less than 10 to 60 new and just before I wrapped it around a tree.
I refuse to believe that his Camaro will not do better. It's not highly modded, but it is modded, and should be faster stock. They're about the same weight.
Here's me guess on his car's stats:
7.8-8.5 to 60, 9 at worst
1/4 mile at worst...17.2
That is not slow. And you don't know how much I get tired of hearing...350...350...350. There are other engines. I think if he want's another engine, he should get another camaro. Keep that one as sort of a relic.
By the way, don't take this as an insult, but I would love to race a 2.8 f-body with my LTD. I usually get beaten by 305 trucks. I can beat them up to 30, then I may as well be hitting the brakes. I can kill the competition tho: full size 307 and 305 cars. There was a guy with an 89 2.8 camaro auto back in Shelbyville. Always wanted to race him and a guy with an 85 caprice 305. But they were a bit to reckless. Got into things that they shouldn't have.:

The Camaro weighs more and the numbers I posted are from a test of a CA 87 RS 2.8 5-Speed. I'd say his 0-60 is high 9's-10.2 and high 16's-17.2 for a 1/4 mile. Maybe.
89camaroRSV6, yes you can, you have done some pretty heavy mods. Must be good doing that with a 2.8, although I wouldn't bother with 1.

I've killed many unsuspecting victims in my durango SLT.
couple camaro, several 5.0 stangs, tons of ricers
that thing is the ultimate humiliator
the funny part is, it gets more races than my camaro!

hmmm...
Well, going by numbers, the LTD. Looks like we have about the same performance stats. I'm not sure how. I must have more horsepower than I've been told. I don't see how a 130 horse camaro could have the same performance stats as a 140 horse LTD. So I must have more hp. I'm guessing around 160-170 to have the performance that I have. It may not be the original 302. I began thinking that when I noticed that the fan and shroud did not line up. I had to shave part of the bottom of the shroud off, because the fan was just barely hitting it. I'm more inclined to believe my engine is from 1986 or thereabouts.
For right now, I have some work to do on it. My transmission work, new plugs, and I need to fix the coolant leak that is has. I'm waiting on some checks that are supposed to come in from my father's insurace or whatever.
After that, maybe I'll even have the truck going- it's still at my father's house. I'm trying to replace the fuel pump.
As for the Topaz, we'd have quite a few hecklers lined up on the sidewalk, wouldn't we? Even tho your car is fast and a Topaz can step up a couple of notches as well...In fact one guy made a SHO Topaz that runs 13s. Can anyone say "torque steer"?
Oh and I don't know about the Cutlass, it'll be awhile. I've got to get my pistons, rings, gaskets, bearings, oil pump, timing set, and then maybe I can get my exhaust and transmission work done. I'm glad it has taken as long as it has, me being short of money. I've learned alot and had time to think about what I want to do. Of course my cousin would advise me anyway, but it's still good to know what your doing.
By the way, you should search and see if there is a specific 2.8/v6 camaro board on the internet. You'd be surprised at what cars DO have enthusiast boards:
Hell, I found a site for each vehicle:
www.ford-trucks.com
www.crownvic.net
www.oldspower.com
www.tempotopaz.com

Jer82Z28- nice to see another Albertan
However I must dispute your claim on how fast your Durango SLT is. It's stock- right?
The only way to settle this is race- my car is an 88 IROC 305 auto/TBI- stock.

Albeit the Laser is s step up from the Civic (Terms of handling/braking), but I can't see a sled like the Camaro outhandling a newer Civic...
