DIY Prom burning (again)

I know I've made various bleatings on this subject before (last winter) all of which were truly well intentioned and I am back at it again.

I have been doing some catch up reading on DIY Prom burning articles and am alot closer to buying THE STUFF which is all the neccessary HW and SW to make it a reality. I already have a laptop (400mg PIII, 15gig, 300 plus mg ram, DVD, etc) so am portable. Need cables and burners and and have a line on the software as well.

If I did buy all this stuff I was wondering if anyone would be interested in burning chips for their car for a modest fee ? I am looking to offset the cost of buying all THE STUFF and figure burning chips for others would be a good way to do this. Otherwise once I get the burn right for my car I really don't need the equipment anymore (unless I make major mods) so it would end up wasting away on a shelf.

I'll follow this post to see if there is any interest ?

thx,
RP.

Yes I would be interested as long as the "modest fee" is not too much. How much do you think you would charge...just a ballpark figure, I'm not saying it has to be written in stone. From what I remember Craig Moates is selling the chips for about $7USD or so, plus some money for your time...PM me if you don't want to post it.

I haven't a clue what to charge ? Performance Resource wants over $250 CDN for a chip that might not work after your next set of mods which is why I am going the DIY route. I think I'd have to spend alot of time experimenting with the equipment to gain some expertise before I could figure out how much to charge anyone. I can assure you it wouldn't be much compared to what you would pay for the off the shelf stuff. I am also not looking for committment from anyone either, just an opinion poll.

thx,
RP.

I am also looking into this, but I need a laptop to get started. The good thing about a group of people getting involved is that we can make a large quantity purchase of chips, maybe cables and split on the costs thus saving fees. the company I work for has a chip burner that should work for this so that is one less purchase for me. I would be interested in getting together with someone who is doing this to see the process.

I'd be interested in fooling around with the equipment... so I'd pay a fee, if its less than $60/hour.

I'd be interested in reverse engineering the package from your Performance Resource chip. We should be able to read the map back into the table on my laptop. Oughta be some interesting tales told there eh ? (I wonder if there are copyright laws on this stuff ???).

I'd like to see the map from something that actually works like the PR chip as opposed to (IMHO) non-performers like Hypertech, Jet, ADS, et al.

I've been programming business application systems for years but never a real time Analog to digital system like my Firebird's SD array. Pretty appealing challenge from a technical perspective. I am sure I can come up with a way to make alot more power and way better gas mileage out of my setup. Especially with a few simple mods like AFPR and larger injectors, hotter spark (if I can ever get that bleedin' Jacobs system working).

BTW Nate -- I had no intention of charging by the hour -- just the completed article eg: a chip that works the way you want. Pretty subjective but then I am not a business nor am I a professional race tech. Just want to offset the cost of some expensive toys and have some fun while I am at it...

thx,
RP.

I'd be interested

It would be really cool to do the burning at a dyno meet. To actually see whats happening.
Just an idea.

Hey, I'd be into that as well, as long as the fee is cheaper than off the shelf and works well, Be kinda cool to have a chip that works with your own car, not just a mass produced one.
Count me in

Hey Scott -- sorry to hear about the OPP adventure -- I hate getting tickets.

I was about to call PR for a chip as per Nathan's experience but then thought for $mondo USD I might as well try the DIY, learn some stuff and have some fun. After border brokers and shipping and taxes and on and on... I figured the price would work out to be similar.

I have a laptop. I need the aldl connector to 9 or 25 pin serial, need to get the software, a burner and some chips. I figured I buy whatever software was recommended off the DIY board. I spent some time there yesterday -- they have a sticky with outstanding material for newbies like me.

I can buy the software -- are you saying you have the aldl connector and burner ?

thx,
RP.

This is a great idea but premature for me. By the time we do a dyno day I will not have gained the expertise in cal mapping required to be effective considering what people will be paying for the dyno and chip re-cal's. In other words I'd probably waste people's time and money. There is probably more experienced people (equiped with the tools) in the region who could pull this off though.

If anyone wants, they can "xerox" my Ed Wright chip. It may be a good starting point for someone who's done a cam swap or anything like that. I'd also be willing to pay for PROM mods. I need to have the injector constant changed from the 22lb/hr to 24lb/hr. I got the injectors after I had the chip burned
