Shifting at high RPM
Shifting at high RPM
OK, another problem.
My car has a 700R4 and is shifting at 2500 RPM, no matter how slow I drive, it just stays in that gear until it hits that RPM ( sucks around town and I never touched a thing ). I've set the TVcable ( cold ) a number of times and the shifter linkage seems to be OK.
It has a shift kit and stall convertor.
Any ideas??

Thats the way I've been setting the cable. It stops at the same spot each time. Maybe I'll try moving it out a notch or two from there and see what it does.
I hate the idea of going back to the tranny shop that rebuilt it. It's been less then a year ago, so it's still under warranty. I've had it back there 5 times since the rebuild. ( shift problems, leaks, etc.) Just scares me to think these guys are specialists.

I reset the TV cable again this morning, took it for a drive and WTF, still doing the same thing. Now I'm p***ed off.
I then pulled the cable out as far as it would go. It then shifted OK, but early. (I was glad about that, at least it's not internal. I hope)
So, a little more driving and a few more stops, moving the cable in a couple notchs each time. It seems to be OK now.
I don't know what happened for it to act this way, but I'm much happier now

After each adjustment of the cable, did you do a WOT test to see if it was ok? Even if you have the WOT set right according to pedal push, the linkage on the throttle body may not be completely open. I had to use a vice grip to make the throttle body stay open as having someone on the pedal only brought it out 98% of WOT and that little margin gave me a messed setting I was totally uncomfortable with in terms of shifting. The test to make sure its ok is to put it in 2nd gear and do the min shift possible, that is be very light on the pedal and as soon as it shifts into second, floor it to WOT and it should instantly shift back to 1st gear. With that small deviation because the linkage was off a bit with the pedal, flooring it would have a hesitation on that test for me. Not only that shift points were well into the 3000 range which is just crazy for normal driving. With my settings at preference light pedal action gets me a shift as low as 1200-1500 RPM mid around 2000-2500 and WOT will shift at 4300 RPM for 1st-2nd-3rd. Netgearhead says max tv linkage to 1/8 inch before should be fine. Adjust it anywhere in b/w that to your own preference. If it doesn't have a spread of shift points that are more or less balanced, then there must be something wrong with the transmission and no matter how you adjust the cable, it won't help.
Thanks for the info guys.
Right now, everything seems to be working fine. With all the grief I've been though with this car, I going to leave well enough alone.
I put a new cable on with the rebuild, so it should be OK. My shift points seem to be good as well. Down shifts fine at WOT.
I did however spend an hour at my buddies shop yesterday. Had this awful rattling noise. Could hear me coming a long ways off. I'd been under the car many times trying to figure it out. Turns out, someone put caliper pins in that were to small. So the calipers works, but were loose and rattling.
Oh well, guess we all need a hobby. Mine just happens to be fixing and more fixing.
