Hot Rod Classification and Emmisions.

Hello,

My car has nothing left of its original emmission gear.. its all gone and the day I have feared for some time now has arrived. A week ago my home town got emmsion testing facilities. So I was talking to a buddy and he said if I put in a engine that was not offered in the year of production it can be considred a hot rod. So my question is.. is this correct .. if I were to put a 350 in my 84 could it be considered a hot rod. Plus, hot rods don't have to pass emmsion test right?? and is there a big difference in insurance when changing classifications.. ?

thanks in advance..

yes, if you put a 350 in your 84 you will get hot rod status, but you will still have to get it tested until 2004, but only at 1980 standards which are a joke.

You are still subject to the visual test, where they look to make sure that you have your emission control items in place ie... your EGR, charcoal canister, catalytic convertor etc. and they make sure that there are no exhaust leaks or smoke coming from the tailpipes. You can get the Hotrod Status because you dropped in a motor that wasn't offered in your car for that year. Most emission testing facilities don't know a cat from a muffler, but if you get someone that knows his ****, they can be real sticky. Good luck.

I'm not sure here? Your car is a 84 camaro? 1984 camaros did come with a 350 SB. All camaros did, didn't they? If they did then the car would not qualify as Hot Rod. If the option for a 350 was there for the car from the factory then no. You need to put a big block in it. 396, or even a 400 SB. 350 SB nope!

Actually the first year the 5.7 was offered in the 3rd gen F body was 1987.So I 'm not sure if 82-86 cars would qualify as hot rods if you've put a 350 in them.

I just watched my Jimmy fail his e-test a couple of weeks ago and finally pass it last week. He's a '91, so it looks like it's odd numbers this year. Unless the car is changing owners, then it'd have to be done if it's last test is more than a year prior.

I don't see why an '84 350 wouldn't be considered a hot rod... Why not play it safe and drop in a 383? Now that definitely wasn't available from the factory.

What lie are you refering to? I wasn't sure if a 84 camaro had a 350. I don't eat and sleep camaros... nice cars, don't get me wrong but I prefer my Monte. Senior Member or not, you can't know everything either. At this rate I think we will be bumping heads a lot. Don't point fingers before you stop to smell the roses. I was just trying to help. Didn't ask for a critic though. you must be really bored, to be so ignorant. NO lies here just wasn't 100% sure about the options. I know my 79 Z28 came with a factory 350. Or is that a lie too?

I will have to say not to belittel another 3rd gener because he does not know every last little thing about our cars. Just because cruzin kaz did not know that the 350 wasnt offered until 87 does not make him a dumb *** or anything and open up to unfounded punishment. Guys the whole reason why we are all on here is to learn, and spread the wealth about the third gen, and not bash each other. Daz lay off the dude, he was just out here trying to help others, no need to put him down, correct him but dont put him down the way you did!!!!

I've heard that you can't qualify for Hot Rod Status if your car could come with a 350, and you change it to a 383 because it is still a 350 block and that's supposedly all that matters, no matter what the internal dimesions of the motor are.

The 383 debate is all on the shoulders of the tech hooking you up.
Some will, some won't. Bottom line is a 350 displaces 5.7 litres of combustible matter. A 383 displces something like 6.2 litres(correct me if I'm wrong) of combustible matter. If one guy won't run you, take it to another place that will. If some *** wants to be a hardnose about it, screw him, take your business somewhere else.
