Traded in the Trans Am

Monday I trade in my trans am for a 2002 sunfire (I know no *****). I need the gas mileage and I need to stop pumping money in to the trans am. If it is ok with everyone I will still be the moderator here and still meet with you guys and organize events

Later

Paul (soon to be f bodyless) Hughes

why the *** would u trade in to a dealer, they give you no cash for your car

Go sell your car private, and then put a downpayment on the transam. You'll get 2-3 thousand more for your car this way!

WHAT! Paul, Your going from a GM upper class vehicle to a GM disposable.

Put it this way. The T/A will be a classic car one day. A Sunfire won't.

Just get a beater man...

Why trade in? Just keep it AND get a cheap gas saver. The dealer won't give you much for it anyways, just take it off the insurance, keep it in the garage or something and drive it when you want some fun... there's no need to get rid of it..

Why would you buy something like that from a dealer unless you're really on the programme.

There's lots good used stuff out there and you won't be tied up with car payments forever.

Last October I got a mint 91 pickup 5 speed V6 with 110K on it for $4,400. It's paid for, runs great and I could sell it today for $5K.

junk

My wife did the Sunfire thing. What a disaster. Piece of junk hey if you are looking for cheap reliable transportation get a Toyota Tercel like mine. I paid $1800 for a '93 just shopped around for 6 months and found a deal -- I've been offered $3k for it already.

When it snows I don't care, when I drive over rock salt I don't care, when I fill it with gas I REALLY don't care (43mpg) and best of all it never breaks down it's a Toyota Tercel.

My wife's Sunfire broke down all the time I mean stuff broke that you would never think was capable of breaking. Then the usual stuff head gaskets, starters, water pumps, and on and on and on... what I pile of junk we sold it for less than 1/3 of what we bought it for did we EVER take a BATH. Our fondest memory of that car was trading it in for a Mazda oh yeah I forgot to mention it died the day we were going to trade it in -- I had to pour $250 into repairs so we could drive it to the Mazda dealer.

When we bough the Sunfire the GM dealer made it sooooo easyyyyyy to get into it we just couldn't say no. Turns out we needed 1.9% financing on that car cause of the extra $$$ required to keep it on the road.

Well so much for my Sunfire story. Good luck with yours oh yeah if you don't have a 3rd gen then you should relinquish your moderators role.

thx,
RP.

Now I will tell you why i traded it,

For he last year I have been sinking money into the car and every time i put money in something else goes wrong. I added it up the other night and it will cost to much for me to get the car the way I want it so I decided to trade in the Trans AM and get something cheap and reliable. I have a warranty now and all my repairs are paid for and I will not be filli up the car 3 or more times a week. I dont have the room for the car here. In a year or two I will find a late model thirdgen in mint shape and with more potential (350). I will get another thirdgen soon and I will stay on the boards and I am still going to moderate because I enjoy moderating and I enjoy getting events together. I dont want to hear any you should have a thirdgen comments. Its not like i hate them or will never have another just not at this moment. I will see you guys at St Thomas on the tenth of August just look for the white 2 door sunfire running high 16's to low 17's The bottomline is if i keep the Trans AM it will never be the way I want it and it will just fall to pieces because my bank account is low because of all the repairs and it is just one thing after another.

Enough rambling

later

Paul

What's the difference in price between a 2002 Sunfire and a very good to mint IROC or TA. What is a Sunfire anyway.

For all I say, its a smart move.
A move I was going to make but I got shouted at and bitched at.. for nothing, and look. I still have the car, good decision to not sell it back than. But it all depends on if I move now.

Dave the way it was with me was I made my mind up and no one could talk me out of it and I didnt feel like listening to people trying to tell me what to do so I kept my mouth shut and posted when I put the deposit on the new car. Dave if you really want to sell it just go and do it and dont listen to anyone.

Paul: I respect ur move big time, cause like as much as I know how expensive it is to own a car like this, its a smarter move to own one of these cars when your older and have a better money income, and for guys our age, a cheap car is good for us.

The only reason I kept on asking questions about to sell or not to sell, is so I just get some input on like mabye it happend to someone else and bla bla bla, just to see how it will work or worked for another person. But ur move is a smart one.
Hey, as long as ur gonna stay on the board thats cool with me.
Post pics of ur new car.

Sorry to hear that.... I for one have to agree with the others Paul. I think it's only right that you step down as Mod at least until you get your hands on another thirdgen.

I personally don't think it would be a problem one way or the other for Paul to remain as a moderator. Everyone should remember that a moderator's job is to moderate- not necessarily be a technical expert, event planner or what-have-you.

The problem of course- and no offense to you, Paul, is that most people, once they don't have a direct interest in the topic (i.e. ThirdGens), tend to 'wander off' slowly but surely until they have basically disappeared. As such, if Paul finds himself in this situation sometime in the future- it might be an idea for him to inform the powers that be that he should be removed as a Moderator and/or a couple of other mods should be added to cover the board.

Beyond that- anyone see the full page ad in the Toronto Star Wheels section on Saturday?

2002 Sunfire (base model) $11,500.00 0% financing.
2002 Sunfire (base-model) $220/month lease for 48 months, buyout of $5400.00 at end of term.

The lease included only the freight cost ($795.00)- the finance did not.

NOW- work this out-

Finance: $11,500.00 + $795.00 delivery + fuel tax (don't know the exact amount- but let's assume $200.00 as it is a 4-banger) + 'administration fees' ($200 or so) + GST and PST= $14,599.25 or thereabouts (pay it over 48 months as well).

Lease: $220.00/month x 48 months + administrative fees ($200.00 again) + fuel tax ($200.00 again) + GST/PST= $12,604.00 (I have given a grand total here, although technically you pay GST/PST on the monthly lease payment).

SO- if you are to lease this particular vehicle vs. finance you are only paying $2000.00 less (i.e. 13.7%) and are left with NOTHING at the end, but a bill for everything the dealer feels like handing you for 'damage', any mileage overruns (20k per year max.) AND, I'm sure GM has gone the way of alot of other manufacturers- IF the 'buy-out' or 'residual value' they calculated on the lease- i.e. $5400.00 turns out to be too high by their market estimation at the end of the lease- YOU are responsible for paying the difference.

Conclusion: This has got to be the absolutely worst lease deal I have ever seen in my life- it's a joke- but obviously proof that GM sells a boatload of cars on the 'easy monthly payment' idea and not to hard-thinking, critical consumers. Maybe some of these 'calculator skills' that the modern education systems provides to students should actually get used once in a while.

And hopefully I'm not sticking my foot in my mouth with this commentary- but I hope Paul didn't lease his Sunfire under such a 'deal'.

Yeah I don't think he necessarily has to have a third-gen to be a moderator.

As long as he want's to do it - fine.

I was going to post something about this earlier but I was too lazy which is one of the many reasons why you wouldn't someone like me as a moderator.

Well all I can say is that if Paul wants to continue as a moderator, then so be it, BUT, if he "disappears from the board" after time, then he should resign.
