man oh man, i think i wax too much!
my legs have no hair left on them! JUST KIDDING
I just waxed for like the 3rd or 4th time in 3 weeks. My car is so shiny I'm blinded by it when the sun shines off it.
But just curious, how much is too much?
Just now I handwashed the car, dried it, applied 1 coat of Meguires Gold Class, then overtop/with the Meguires I put some RAIN-X.
BTW is RAIN-X any good? Everybody always talks about BEAD-X but I don't see that in stores, so I assume it's the same thing pretty much? Cost alot for that RAIN-X stuff!!!
But seriously, should I be waxing this much? I mean, i love the outcome of the car, but It takes like 2 hours for this entire process and my bones are getting brittle (i'm 19 years old, i'm an old fart just like the rest of you! :P)

Dood... you shouldn't have to wax your car that often. Especially that colour. I say once a month is sufficient. Also, water beading isn't the best thing either.
Water beads hold grime and harmfull agents, causing water marks, which couls turn to pitting and craking in the paint. The best wax will cause the water to "roll" off the car. I believe Meguiers gold class causes water "roling".. I use the same wax, the stuffr rocks

oh really, that's interesting, I guess I'll return the RAIN-X.
ACtually the meguires keeps my car shiny, but u know me, I am mr picky, and I want my car SUPER SUPER DUPER shiny. I notice the meguires attracts alot of DUST. The RAIN-X stuff says "detracts wax, bugs, etc." So I thought I'd add a layer of it.

wax, polish, etc
When I bought my Formula it had sat in a garage for 3-4 years collecting dust.
I used a clay bar first, then Mothers cleaner, then Mothers polish and since have been using Mothers pure carnauba.
According to Mothers you can carnauba the car until you drop dead and it won't hurt the finish providing you...
- wash the car with auto finish soap
- clean and dry the car first
- use the right applicator
- rub the wax off with a cotton towel (I have dozens the wife is always wondering "where did my towels go ???" hahahahaha).
I have about 30 or 40 coats of carnauba on mine. I wash it and wax it it takes about an hour nowadays.
If you want to do in your finish use a combo polish and wax on a regular basis. Better learn the difference fast cause the polishing agents are murder on our clear coats.
RAIN-X ? I don't need RAIN-x I have windshield wipers. They came with the car.

Re: wax, polish, etc
Ya can't beat carnuba wax... it isn't as durable as the other teflon based waxes but it looks just as good when applied right and is easy on the painted surfaces

I use Turtle Wax Carnuba Gold... works good for me..

I've got a couple comments here that may be helpful...
1) There is no need or benefit to waxing your car more the 2-3 times a year unless you wash your car everyday. A good quality wax with a couple coats (paint sealer and carnuba) should easily last 4-6 months. There is such things as having excess wax build-up and this can actually have a slight dulling effect.
2) 100% cotton terry cloth towels is a must! No exceptions here.
3) California duster is a great time saver. If there is only a mild dusting on your paint it works great and it won't scratch. Also, if you know a rain storm is coming up and you're quick enough, dust your car off before the rain drops hit it and it will reduce the amount of water spots on the finish...nothing that a Mother's Showtime or Meguiar's Quik Detailer won't take care of.
4) Rain-X works awesome for the windshield. Even with the worst of wipers, this stuff works great. But I wouldn't put it on my paint.
5) Try out Zaino! I guarantee you'll thank me...it's one of the best polish systems on the market and takes a fraction of the time that normal waxes do. And it works best with multiple coats. It's not cheap...but definately worth it!

Hey Chris.... the thing with only waxing your car 3 or 4 times a year may work for you, because your car is white... but when it comes to black, it needs more frequent waxing. Especially when its not kept in a garage
True that...white is much easier. But actually man, an easy solution or at least a way to cut down on the number of required waxings is to use Showtime or Quik Detailer (or Z6) after every wash. I use Showtime myself and do that after every wash or two and only have to wax my car twice a year. One important question for you is what car wash soap are you using? I've found some brands in the past actually have the effect of stripping the wax off.

As often as your wash your car you are washing away your protectant -- all soaps do that.
Everytime you get in the rain some of your protectant gets washed off.
Even if you don't wash it often the sun and wind will burn off some of your protectant -- especially the silcone based stuff.
Wait till the first time a gull ***** on your paint and it etchs through the surface finish because you don't have enough protectant on it. Wow will you be pissed -- hey I had this happen to me before.
Hey Aug 10th lets line up your finish with mine and see which shines the most ? My too often carnauba vs. your every once every 4-6 months Zaino ???

Since we're doing competive shines... why not go all the way who's up for a competitive dullness match?
So far so good.. we got a worst 60' times match coming so while we're at it how about a worst 1/4 mile too?
Knowing koff someguy's koff luck maybe it'll get stuck at the line? hehe

Palric, true that...but I guess I'm not really talking true daily driver here either, as that is a huge factor. But honestly, with the right soap and a good quality brand wax/polish, 4-6 months should last no problem.
A shine-down! haha
But honestly Palric dude...that's not fair! Darkish blue colour up against white is not a fair comparison...dark colour will always come out on top unfortunately. Number one rule when entering a show and shine with a light coloured car is never park beside a dark one. Of course if you wanna do a night time comparison out of the direct sunlight...that might work.

Chris.... I used to use Zainos detail spray.. but I am all out
But it still doesn't help too much... because the more you rub a black car, the more scratches you get.
Don't rub another mans rubarb
Sorry... just had to say that

Well, maybe. Fact is my car really doesn't need wax to shine the previous owner had it repainted and I don't know what they put in the paint but it sure shines. On a cloudy day it just looks blue but on a sunny day I call it bite-me-blue cause it kinda jumps out at you ? Ok now I am just a proud owner bragging.
It will be fun enough just catching up with everyone on race day.

I'll be at the track but probably not till a bit later. I'm not racing that day, just coming to hang out. I should be there about 10:00 or 11:00 though. We can argue...umm, I mean talk about waxes then.

About the wax you'll have to find out for yourself which wax or polish works best. Everyone has their own opinion based upon experience. Some colours respond diffferently and there is a difference between metallics and acrylics. Its up to you.

Just like Palric said...ask the shop about how long to wait before waxing. Usually the longer you wait the better. I've always been told about a month.
As for what wax is better...lot of factors there! I swear by Zaino and use nothing else on my car. I wouldn't say that it's hugely better than Mother's or Meguiars, but due to the way it is applied, and the ease of removal, the extra timesavings alone for me is worth the extra cost. So my bias opinion is Zaino is your best route...but the Mother's 3 step process is also a good cheaper alternative.
