Okay....I know our cars aren't the greatest when it comes to gas milega BUT, getting 250kms a tank(55 litres if I'm not mistaken) in city driving and highway is B/S!! My car smell's like unburned gas and I just had my car emission tested three weeks ago. Passed unbelievably. For those of you at Krispy Kreme's, you saw how well my car passed. Before the test I took the car out of storage(10 months), gave it an oil change, sprayed throttle body cleaner and had it tested.
Now, can anyone explain the poor gas mileage. What's your horror story with gas mileage and what are some suggesttion's.
My signature has my mod's listed minus the 3.73 gears(i have 3.08's for now) and the 17" rims. The stock GTA rims are on the car for now. I hope this helps with your suggesttions.
Thanks for your input guys.

The carb'd and TPI versions of our cars get pretty abysmal mileage.
On the hiway my TPI with a Jacobs system gets about 24-25mpg before the jacobs and with bad injectors I used to get 19-21 pretty poor if you ask me. Around town I get about 350-380kms to a tank -- it used to be 280-320kms to a tank. Not much eh ?
The TBI cars can do really well on gas. If you want to go somewhat fast and get decent mileage (for a 3500lb car) get a TBI ?

ya that seems pretty stupid gas mileage... I get about 520kms to the the 60L tank... Ohm test your injectors while they are hot... I bet some of them could be garbage.. if they are let me know I have an extra 22lbs set in my garage..

I can get roughly 400kms per tank, with around half of that on the highway. I'm not totally sure since I always fill up before I hit 350kms. The 'bird is actually a little better on gas than my lil Jimmy, although I haven't put much miles on him since his new oxygen sensor went in. It really sucks when they both need filled up in the same week. $$$

well,
i get about 350 to a full tank(city) and maybe if im lucky 200 highway (thats staying at 110-120) and it costs me 20 to fill at 72c/l which isnt bad, when i got my car etested..they said my fuel rails might be on their way out(hence the overpowering fuel smell)...my pcv valve is gone(more gas smell) and the mas may be plugged or gone...check all these and you could find your problem..
btw...
find anything out about your system??

Hey all : First of all............check out the shape of your fuel-lines ..
I think it's same prob i had ........good looking lines ........pin-hole in 1 of them ......
.
Cause i noticed the same prob and thats what it was !!!
At 1 of clamps .where they clamp to your frame .
2nd........I sweer by Dura-lube fuel treatment !!!!!!
I put a bottle in 4-5mths ago cause my car did'nt seem right .
So i bought 1 added it with my gas ( while you fill-up ) !!!!
And i tell ya ..what a difference !!!!
:hail: to Dura-lube !!!
Anyways try that ......Canadian Tire has em on-sale this weekend
2 for 1 ......... $ 16.99 !!!!!

i would be glad to get 350k out of a tank. highway i would be lucky to get 300k and city, F... that i dont even like to think about it.

i too have a raw gas smell at the back end of my car. i dont think that it is coming form the exaust. i think that i may have a broken filler neck to the tank and when the fuel sys is under pressure it causes the RAW gas smell. i looked under the car to see if i have a hole in the tank because it smell so much. you may have the same thing. there is no way you could pass the etest and have a gas smell. your car would also back fire all the time.
check for a leak in the sys.

no no no.
if the engine was running rich and the exaust smelled like gas it would back fire because of the unburnt fuel in the cat and muf.
running that rich would also pull up codes in the computer and you would be seeing the SES
the lines leaking would not cause it to back fire

With a TPI based system, you are looking at high pressure in the lines. I'd check to see for a leak.. follow your nose basically. I replaced my fuel lines back in March from engine to filter. It's not that hard of a task really, just need time patience and warm weather.. which we have in abundance. The smallest pinhole leak would not throw a code, cause a smell, and get terrible gas milage so I'm pointing my finger at a leak in the line... 50 psi lines tend to get these in their old age...

Umm... Mileage gets better on the highway since you're in a higher gear and not accelerating/decelerating nearly as often as you are in the city. Well that's assuming that you're not on the QEW headed into Toronto every morning...

i get 400-420 highway with my 350 TPI with 3:27 rear. 325-350 ocity. Thats the 50l tank as well...... Id check injectors first then go from there.
I hate you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone is doing better than me
Trigger - Yes, I do have a leak or something at the filler portion of my tank. I forgot about that.
Iroc2NV - No rating on RMS. I'm just going to sell the amps and buy a 4 channel amp that can handle 200+ rms per line. I also found a SONY deck for $100(used) with 4 RCA outputs in the back.
92Zedder - I'll check the ohms on the injectors when their running hot. Paradise wants $150 for 8 injectors(22lbs). How much you want for yours. Maybe we can work out deal/trade?
To the rest of you...........I'm glad at least your not going through this problem. I get leave my house to go out without making sure my tank is fuel and filing up again to go home. That's why I can't go to drive-in nights because I'l spend $80 for 2 full tanks plus another $30 at the movies. $110 to see movies@%*!#.
Thanks for all you input. I'm going to start by check the lines. Is there an easier way to detect a leak other than smelling it? Pressure check?
P.S. Anyone know how much a 1LE gas tank goes for from the dealer or a rebuild shop? You know those guys who sell refurbished tanks. Is it a major price difference from our stock tanks?

88redxstcy: Don't feel too bad, i get aroun 6-8km/L. It's terrible that i'm using so much fuel.
Good to have you back Cruz' N. If I had an engine like yours in my T/A I wouldn't care how much gas I burn. My engine (305) is almost stock, other than the air intake setup, and I'm getting 250km's a tank(60L). By the way, 6 km a litre, on a full tank will get you 360km's. Great, a 350 stroked engine gets better gas milage then me. Good bye cruel world...........
One more thing was brought to my attention. Apparently, that night after Krispy Kreme I went to my brother-in-laws Mr. Sub shop and he told me that while I was reving my engine(in park) he saw black smoke coming out of my exausht. What does this mean?? It's no from burning oil(blue smoke). Does this new info help lead to the source of my problem?

Your definately running too rich. Maybe your FPR is gone.
I got the car done by the way and I have 300km left for the breakin, that should be done by tomorrow.

Okay, I don't think anyone has said this yet which is VERY surprising...Dude, 88redxtsy, you have 3.73 gears! These are not the gears you want if you're gonna worry about mileage!
I hate to sound harsh here, but in terms of the gas smell, 250KM on a tank, etc...Welcome to reality buddy! That's about what I get as well. You'll just have to get used to it. It's either that or put back in the stock 2.73 gears, which I'm sure you're not gonna do.

The highest gear set I'd go with for a daily driver is 3.42... after that I consider it all strip but take this into consideration...
At 3.73 65 mph/100kmph is about 3300rpm in 3rd gear and a measly 2300 rpm in 4th only... a 300 rpm increase over a 3.23 set... not that significant at all considering 2300 rpm is still below the max torque of my lo3 2400 rpm, with a tpi max torque occurs at what 3000 rpm? and a 350 has it at 3200rpm? Stock only..
As long as you keep within the torque curve you are within efficiency of the the engine... after max torque you are running a higher rpm and getting less power per rpm...
Now here's the thing, if you have smoke out the exhaust, I don't imagine it being efficient at all. If its not blue smoke, its black smoke and that means you are running rich... (If its white smoke that's a real pita...) Fuel is just going to waste hence your crappy milage...
Another issue is fuel pressure . To run efficiently you need to have the fuel system pressurized. A leak anywhere in the system wreaks havoc on milage. Emissions goes to hell... mileage... and performance... when I had a break at the filler on my tank, my milage went to hell...
A leak in the lines would cause a lean condition usually...
Bad injectors/ignition/o2 and any sensor really for that matter screws up and gives rich...
First track down why you are running rich, then figure out how to get good milage.

IROCKER - If I had the 3.73 gears I wouldn't be complaining. But I have the 3.08 gears in right now. If gas mileage is this bad now how bad is it going to be with 3.73???? What...am I going to get 100km a tank!
I going to check my injectors, O2 sensor, and might as well put an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.
Thanks for all your replies guys. Really appreciate your help. If I find the source I'll post it. You think the timing could have a play in this? Too retarded or too advanced?

If it was too retarded, you'd have engine backfire and/or glowing red hot exhaust manifolds....
Too advanced and you be having knock so loud you know something was wrong...
My bet is on a lack of fuel pressure... when you take your gas cap off do you hear a big rush of gas coming out? It's supposed to be very very pressurized on a TPI setup.. my system is only 15 psi but its ungodly loud after a good run and I pop the fuel cap off... I know a 50 psi tpi setup should be even more dramatic

Excellent point to you anyone else that mentioned this. When I owned my Z34, every single time I opened the gas cap I would here the pressure from the system depressurize. I mean loud!!!! With the T/A I here nothing. Zilch. This never clicked into me before. Better lay off the crack for awhile(just kidding).

One more thing. Seeing the light has helped lead me to another source to the problem. Actually 16thowner helped with this one(indirectly). When he replied to my TopSpeed post, he provided a link to the General Info section of this site. As I was scrolling down I came across a question about 160 thermostat. As I read, it says that a 160 will effcet air/fuel ratio because of over cooling thus hurting performance and fuel mileage. DOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3 three years ago I put a 160 thermoatat from SLP in my car. Do guys really think that a themostat could have that much of an effect? Or it's part of the problem. Anyways....a new 180 will go in, I'll worry about a 170 when I install a fan switch from Hyper-tech. I'll also be picking up a new gas cap and try and find out where the leak in my system is.
Thanks again and see you at the track this Saturday!!!

With a 160 you run borderline b/w open and closed loop... I tried the 160 and couldn't get closed loop operation even if my life depended on it during night... so I went 180 and have been happy. Open loop operation will destroy your cat and give the exhaust a weird funky smell...

28 MPG? Damn, I only get 22.4 with a 6 cylinder Maxima.

I am going to Niagara with my wife on Labor Day weekend. Suggest any cool places? We are taking the Maxima because there is no way in hell the T/A will be done. Maybe then I can get 30mpg on the ride up.

When I'm in Niagara with my gf, we usually like to walk near the falls, there are parks on both sides of the border where you can get spectacular views. At night too they usually light up the falls with colored spotlights giving a nice view...
Gotta visit the casino while there, take a walk around the tourist areas, very nice just to kill time...
Anyone from the area who knows of some good sights that are worth seeing as well?

IROCKER are u saying that my rear-end is something like that also? since my gas mileage is just so terrible?
Supreme Member
You may have different gears in there Dave, but it's hard to say. What RPMs are you at if you're cruising on the highway at about 100-120?
Senior Member
For the guys thinking of getting gears, your fuel milage inside the city will probably improve, not get worse. Going to a higher numerically gear set (ie 3.08 to 3.73) reduces the rolling resistance in the driveline. It takes less effort to get the car moving with 3.73s than it does with 3.08s. I noticed a big improvement in gas milage in the city when i went to 4.10s from 3.08s.
Supreme Member
My city mileage kinda went to hell after the gear swap to 3.23s... highway mileage also went to hell as well. I remember back with the 2.73's I'd be hitting around 450 km in city and 600+ km on highway... Now I see around 350-400 km city and 550 km highway...
Odd though today I was at the 140 km mark and still had almost 3/4 of full tank... I always reset my trip meter at every fill up to guage my usage of fuel. I've been purely city driving since last fill up, haven't touched highway with this tank.
That 6* timing may be working a miracle in mileage which means I owe JohnnyIroc a lot then...

IROCKER: My RPMS are pretty low I dont exactly remeber how low they were, but I remeber that its like almost nothing haha it amazes my buddies. I havent checked with the new engine yet.
But with the old one at lets say 100-120km/h it would be at a 1500-2000 or even possibley lower 2000`s region. Like I dont even remeber if it was even at 2000 at times, next time ill check for u.
