Got headers

I bought a set of headers today. Quite the deal check this out:

Flowtech 1 & 1/2 inch (or was it 1 5/8 inch ?) headers with collector adaptors, O2 bung and no air connectors -- $120.00 CDN brand new off the shelf. Add $23.00 for shipping from Winterpeg.

Bought them off Phil @ Fasttoys.net if any of you are interested he says he has one set left. Pretty decent setup for a 305 can't say what it would do for a 350 or bigger ?

Lets see, SLP headers $900, Dynomax $590, Flowtechs $120. I'll send them in for ceramic coating. Maybe they'll last awhile.

RP.

Hey what do you think about this idea.. drilling a hole and welding a tube into say the flow path of tube 8 and 7 to create pretty much "air tubes".

The purpose of air tubes is just to inject air into the exhaust stream at startup for the cat. Would it really matter what point in the stream the air is injected? As long as the tube is created just after the bend the exhaust gasses are on their merry way down already by that point.

Heck even a tube into the path at 5 or 6 would do the same deal.

If someone else thinks this idea may work I just may be crazy enough to go design it and have someone make the tubes for me.

I know flowtechs have 1 1/2s, but I'm not sure if they make 1 5/8ths for our cars.

Flowtechs are definitely 1 1/2" primaries... but that's just fine for a 305. Darbleinad is actually running the 1 1/2" on his 255 with no real signs of choking.

That link is the one Brad sent me when I got my Flowtechs. They work well with the 305's. They were used by Kevin Vandevenne on his 350 for about 3 months before he pulled the car off the road. He said that it would work better on a 305 than a 350.

the flowtech headers are definetly better for a 305, but they work pretty good on my 355. i am happy with them. i was thinking of going to headman long tubes, but i doubt i will. Palric you got a hell of a deal there on those units. are you getting a custom bent y-pipe or buying the flowtech one?

He has dual cats.. so no y-pipe. I've heard from a few people, the flowtech y-pipe is actually designed good.

Hey Rovic that is precisely what I had in mind.

I have seen people cut the adaptor off the factory exhaust manifold and weld it to the 1/2, after drilling holes of course. I was wondering why not 7/8 so they are out of the way ? In any event I will be drilling the headers and adapting the AIR to keep the system emissions legal.

Kevin -- I think they are the same as your link.
Brad -- glad to hear they work for you.
Mark A. Shields -- I refuse to engage in a conversation with a mythical being.

adious,

you dont need the AIR system to pass....as long as your car is in tune, you wont need the AIR...scrap that piece of junk and dont wreck new headers by putting AIR lines to them.

I won't likely worry about installing most of this stuff at least until after we move to our new house in February. It's tough to work on the car where we live now. For exhaust, I have a Dynomax Super Converter with a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler on the car right now. I still have to buy a y-pipe and some 3.73 gears to make my winter project complete. My Holley 4010 dual inlet should arrive Monday. And the rest of the parts have been sitting in my dining room for a couple of months now.

Next summer, I hope to see some better numbers both on Dyno Day as well as at the track. A good friend of mine has been teasing me with a Chevy 350 Sportsman he's trying to sell. The 500hp would be nice, but the price tag's a little out of my range as an OSAP-repaying chick. *sigh* I should see some real improvement though with the mods I have planned. Thanks again!

3.73s

Hey Copperchick sounds like your 305 is going to pound some pavement before your are done. Dyno day 2003 should be fun !

Oh yeah -- you would not believe what I paid (a few weeks back) for a set of never been used 3.73 Richmond Gears. Probably about 1/2 price. Just have to shop around and be patient.

Good luck,
RP.

Richard, I know one of the exhaust companies sells prefabbed AIR tubes for thirdgen headers. I know SLP sells stainless AIR tubes but they're expensive. I think it's Hedman that sells them.

You've got too many posts for a real person.

Ok maybe you are real. Why don't you show up at one of our track days next year and prove it ? hahahaha Mark A. Shields in person -- people would probably show up just for the novelty...

I say just forget about the air tubes etc....as someone said above if your car is decently tuned it shouldnt have a problem passing, I passed mine yesterday with no changes to my current set up (capped off air tubes/air pump) for the 2nd time in two years, and my car is by no means an "exceptionally tuned machine".

What I have been told is that as long as the car is nice and hot (normal opperating temp) with a decent cat & egr, when they throw it on, not having the air tubes on will not effect it to the point you are not going to pass. The only thing you have to be concerned about it failing the visual, but my observations over the last couple of years is that most shops dont really pay much attention to the visual inspection part,

Just my 2 cents!

Just a thought, but why not keep all the air tubes in a safe place in case you need to put them on at a later date for the etest.

Ie. if it passes then dont put them on if it doesn't pass then put them back on.

Anyway its just an idea.

Just tell them its a 400 or something and get the hot rod status. i doubt any shop is going to check the casting numbers on the block. They usually will take your word for it. That will make the visual alot easier.
