LG4 Engine
LG4 Engine
Look! A tech question finally
I was reading my firebird book for thirdgens and noticed that from 82 - 87 (I might be off here) the 305, 4 barrel carb engines were making 190hp and 250tq. Is this right! with a 5speed! Wow! call me nieve.....
Anyway.....is this known as the LG4 engine? or is this a different engine?

The LG4's were rated at a whopping 155 HP, hence the desire to upgrade these boat anchors. Palric sent me a page from a site where a couple guys took an LG4 from a Camaro and did some simple bolt-ons and a XE cam and they ended up at ...get this...324 HP I would like to get close to that as I can. I still have a long way to go
With the new headers and cat-back, we'll see at Dyno Day, how much farther I have to go.

those new headders and cat back on that LG4 of yours Kevin will certainly help out with the numbers....for some reason I thought you also had a Cam swap in mind for the winter?

Geez....you really are keeping that thing under wraps till dyno day eh Kevin.......regardless I heard thru a couple of memeber that LG4 of yours was making a surprise appearance at the Toronto Boat show this weekend....after all it is a boat anchor so it should fit right in! Ha ha :lala:
Regardless, in all honesty I am interested in seeing what gains you do get from your mods next year at the dyno day.

We'll see how that peanut cam of yours does at Dyno Day. Just make sure you put an atleast a dollars worth of gas in before you come down. That should do you the trip down, back and then some.
J/K L69.....I keep hearing of the LG4. Were the L69 engines rare or something? Does anyone on the board have an L69 engine in their car? with a manual transmission? I'm sure that thing could move. Faster than my TPI.

I don't have a list of the differences but it was more than just the snorkle. Pistons in the early LG4s were dished v. flat tops in the L69. It seems though that the LG4s did get better in later models.

Here is a link for all your engine specs. The L69 was available up to 1986 and was a 4 bbl carb/HO. It was discontinued in 1987.

That t-junction spliced into that hose there looks like it's about to let go.
Maybe shouldn't go on any long trips until you get that fixed.

Hahaha...don't you worry, all new heater hoses are the first thing that I plan on doing before spring. I will not have a repeat of last summer, this year. I actually want to clean up that bay by getting rid of the aircon, since it doesn't work anyways, and rerouting the heater hoses and some wiring. I also want new valve covers. I was in Buffalo and at Auto Zone they had a set for centerbolt heads for $39.99. They were ribbed, but other than that, they were plain Jane, which suits me fine. I just wish I had picked them up.

85 were the LG4 @ 155HP, L69 @ 190HP & LB9 @ 215HP
LB9 being the TunePortSystem
86 were the LG4 @ 165HP, L69 @ 190hp & LB9 @ 190hp
Yes the LB9 V-8 dropped to 190HP but its torque rose to 285lbs
87 were the LG4 @ 165HP, LB9 @ 215HP & L98 @ 220HP

With all the new guys on the board, I might try and see about a full day booking, depending on how many actually want in. It's either that, or we tack on a couple of hours. We'll see when the time comes.

LB9
When it came to the LB9, not gunna argue, the book made it all very hard to follow at the 88 and up point, they couldnt put it straight and easy like i tried too
It had listings for Auto trany vs Stick and with dual cats and with out and some performance axil thing which brought the LB9 total to 235HP Stick with Dual Cats, and loaded with everything, for 89. Yet 92 was listed at only 230HP with all the options.
92 quote right from the book.
""Beneath those hood bulges sat either the familiar 5.0l or the Corvette derived 5.7l powerplant. The smaller engine was rated at 170HP with TBI (code LO3), or 230HP with the TPI setup (LB9) and performance axle (205HP without). That performance ratio cost as much as $675.00 extra, in a package that included a dual cat exhaust system, bigger brakes, aluminum dravshaft, special shocks, and more.""
But then again it also says the 90 350 TPI IrocZ is the fastest 3rd Gen, and i would of thought the 91 or 92 would of been the same speed at least or tuned to go abit faster.

If you ordered the G92 performance option, you got the dual cats, better(?) 9-bolt rear end, etc. If you spec'ed your car without A/C, the 1LE option would be added as well. As far as differences between LG4 & L69, the L69 had a higher compression ratio (9.5 vs. 8.6), higher lift cam, dual snorkel air cleaner and a better flowing exhaust.
