406's are they worth it?
well..
ive been presented with an opportunity....
my half sister is with a guy that builds engines..
he has a 406ci block fully balanced and what not...all it needs is heads (had dart 202s on it) and a cam..and also a carb (even though im thinking of making it fi if i get it)..
now..
he wants $2000 for it..hell put the heads, cam, and whatnot on it..he was also saying to put the linkenfelter(sp) parts on it (superram?)
is this a good deal..and would i be happy..i mean i dont really want it for the 1/4 mile just something to accent the iroc now..
any opinions are greatly appreciated..

ps..if i do get it..it wont be in until this winter coming...winter 2003/2004

Seems abit high, i got a 400ci block with crank and rods for $500 from Rudy Held awile back, it dont cost that much to bore it 30 over to make it a 406ci. But then pistens can be abit pricey, depending what kind, ect. Dont mind me I am intoxicated and babling abit. Your car and auto or stick? Its easier er.. cheaper to put that motor in if your auto as u just need an harmonic balancer and some little balancing plate for your flex plate, if your stick then u need a new flywheel as the stock 2 bolt main flywheel wont fit 4 bolt main of the engine. Hmm guess that means u would need a diferent flex plate too, but there cheaper then balanced flywheels. Oh and u gotta make sure your 4 bolt flywheel is the right diameter as too big wont fit in your....er.. whats the darn thing called...bell housing, thats it. U need these balancer things as your 305 or 350 crank should be internaly balanced, were as the 400 crank is externaly balanced. But all in all that engine would kick some behinds nicely. And it does fit under a TPI system
Trust me there.
But custom chips are abit hard to find here in Canada, and u would need one to tweek it to perfection, larger injectors couldnt hurt either.

sorry i was so vague...
i know he said something about flat topped pistons with an angled valve job?? (im not up to speed with the engine talk)
the $2000 includes everything except the cam, heads, and carb/fuel injection setup..but he did mention a lingenfelter superram.. it has ford 26 psi injectors or something?? it was in his 69 camaro ss dynoed at 600+hp..ill see if i can get the printout..
this guy is serious though... he has like 4 vettes... a z06, zr1, one with a lotus engine in it..and some other one that he wouldnt let me see under the hood of.. (early 90s maybe)
so is that $2000 worth it.. i mean..a set of heads, cam and superram would put me back...like what $8000 more??
thanks again guys

Cams arnt that pricey, but heads sure can be, what are u running now? U can run a stock 305/350 cam and heads, they will work, but um........ well i shouldnt need to say more.
If that includes SuperRam and Injectors then ya its very very worth it.
And remember emisions, that limits how big the cam can go.
All ZR1's have the lotis engine.
Its called the LT5. Very potent.
If he had 600+hp then the crank and rods should be or had best be very good ones and not the stock ones. Depending on what they are is as to if its worth it, because the block and stock crank/rods are only worth $500. Sounds like he has some decent pistons and they can be pricey too.
Basicaly its up too you if its worth it too you. Do you wanna spend that kind of cash? The car can work great and go fast and be very diferent with that kind of setup. But it wont be super cheap.
I got a m8 with a 406ci in his second gen and its not as bad on gas as i would of thought, he is also only a 4-speed stick. Goes not to shaby too.

I thought you had a blower and or nitrous?
IMHO, a healthy, built 406 for $2000 is a great deal. Just make sure it's really a 406 and not a 305.

I think $2000 for a short block 406 is pretty pricey
Considering these came with nodular iron cranks, short rods for bad rod ratios and they are externally balanced.....
basically ask your sisters boyfriend this...and take notes!
-What kind of crank is it
-What kind/lengths of the rods
-What pistons are in there
Now if its a factory crank with even Gm 5.7 rods and hypereutectics pistons i still think its too much but then again it IS a 400.
heads/cam to make 600HP is going to be expensive. Most likely a solid roller conversion and a set of good flowing heads are going to run you about $4000 everything said & done to make that kind of power. You still need an intake ect.....
If its a cast crank 5.65" rodded 400 with ****ty hypereutectics you can tell him I said hes full of **** about 600+HP.
Get the details, post em, then we'll tell u

Iroc2nv,
Man your car will be off the road for a year if you try this 400 swap. Check out the engine swap board and ask around, do searches (when the fricking engine is up again) and see all the 911 calls made by guys doing 400 EFI swaps. Hey it's one of my favourites too -- but from what I read it can be a royal pain to finish what you started.
Also, if that motor is balanced and blue-printed with verifiable low mileage then IMO $2k is a reasonable price.
JohnyIROC -- there are several guys on the swappo board running stock 305 TPIs on top of 400s. It will work well once you get past the swap gremlins. IT won't be an optimized setup by any means but from all accounts the GM EFI can handle the cubes without mods and performs well.
Hey Hawk92z-TDZ -- ZR1 engines are built by Mercury Marine.
adious,
RP.

406's are worth it
And if you decide you want more stroke it to 434 or bigger..What kind of heads?etc..Stroked-Z made all the points..And I dont see a 406 more of a problem than putting a 383 or a 350 in..Unless you want to stay under 300HP..lol..Bigger cubes is always worth it..

1st .....what kind of block WAS it..... get that casteing # .....find out if it was a 400 to begin with!
2nd ..... if it is a stock 400 ( now 406 ) you arent getting no 600 hp out of it ......and haveing it last at all . they have them steam holes inbetween the cylinders( weak point for serious HP) .....and if he was running No2 .....it could be cracked . .....-------> get the block magna fluxed ( checked for cracks)
3rd .... find out what internals are in it ( especially that crank ) it better be a forged one if he says it handled 600 hp .
if it is a stock casteing with ordinary parts ( not forged ! ) leave it alone ...your money is better spent elsewhere.
I would have this motor checked out before I got it ( even though you know the guy)
just remember pals are pals ..... business is business
good luck to ya

Palric....really do you know what "balanced & blueprinted" means? And you must know something that all those top engine builders dont know out there. Whats your secret? Your the only one who can make a big cubed motor run good on a stock TPI. Buddy running good means running better than 15.0 with a 406. Did you know that? Your little voice annoys me so much i cant express it into words. And to think i've never talked to you, or met you or even directed a reply other than this to you. Maybe its the uneducated answers you post, or maybe its the "Palric has attached this image" of your *** damn car 95% of the time you reply. i dunno. but i feel very good venting about this. i am relaxed now. Run along now....

Hey Jerkoff.....its my, get this, "SIGNATURE" u moron.
And "Check the swap boards." You must be a moron. Do you turn your own wrench? have you ever modified anything other than adding an air cleaner?
Hell i dont even own a thirdgen & know the stock tpi's dont breathe well with stock 350's.....now moron listen up.....
Add 56 more cubes, 1/4" more stroke, and more cam, how bout more heads....what do you get moron.....A CHOKED 406.
Does your brain function? Stop reading magazines & do something constructive. Try it!
Whatever your secret is you might want to contact CHP(Chevy High Performance) magazine & let them know so many more morons like yourself will "get right into that swap"
*** your dumb......now watch......i'm going to add in my "SIGNATURE" u idiot......and unlike your stock 305, its worth adding in.

I dunno but all I found on the swap board was the problems of those who try putting in a PONTIAC 400 or a BBC "400"in a thirdgen...Changing the cam AND adding more cubes is more friendly to the computer than changing the cam alone..IMO

Putting in a 400 small block isnt that big of a deal, [bin there, done it], all the mounts are the same, ect. Ya just gotta remember that its externaly balanced not internaly, same as a 383 wit the 400 crank [yus i know u CAN get them internaly balanced], and deal with that with the harmonic balancer and the balancing plate for the flexplate or getting a balanced flywheel, and remember that TPI stock blocks are 2bolt mains and the 400 will be a 4 bolt main, means new flywheel anyways, ect. Same as putting any 4 bolt main 350. The stock TPI will work, but not very optimal in the least bit, Stroker guy is right, u had best upgrade for any real potential.

as far as the 4 bolt 400 ( didn't know that ) and the 2 bolt stocker in my car ........ the different flywheel is because of the 1 piece seal vs. a 2 piece seal ...... not the main caps .
did you know ...you can swap a bbc flywheel for a small block one ..... just depends on the generation of the block and how many inches they were ( chevy made 2 untill the 400 cam along)
If you are dealing with an internally balanced engine flywheels are easy to find ....... you just gotta know which one you got ...... when you get that new starter.
hehehehehe now here is my sig LMAO

Not all 400 blocks are 4 bolt..The other thing to worry about an SBC 400 is the starter bolt holes..Make sure its drilled/tap for the same bolt pattern as our starters..
extra things needed over a regular 350 build
1)steam holes in heads
2)harmonic balancer
3)Flexplate/flywheel
4)All 400 blocks are 2 piece rear main seal..so if your converting from an 87 and up you will need the oil pan

Sweet mercifull crap, it's not like this guys gonna get the engine. That $2000 could be better spent on carbon fiber cup holders or a new park bench/rear wing.
