A/C - yank it ... or not??

My a/c has not worked for a couple of years now, which is not a big deal. I was just wondering if anyone has yanked one of these systems out before. I know it will free up a lot of space under my hood but is the effort worth it?? Also, are there any other performance gains to doing this besides the shorter drive belt (I don't think there would be, but I'm not sure)??
Opinions would be greatly appreciated.

If you take off the whole A/C system your car will be 50lbs lighter in the front.Car will handle better,be cheaper on gas and have a cleaner engine bay.Your cooling system will be more efficient also.I just hope you have t-tops..BTW Im keeping my A/C

It cleans up the engine bay a lot if you remove it and you can get to 6 and 8 without raising the car.

Don't know for sure but I think the non-ac heater boxes are difficult to find.

When you say it doesn't work is it like complete garbage or just needs recharged.

If mine was junk I don't think I'd pay a lot to fix it - I'd get rid of it but it still works so for now it's staying.

Daz, have you misplaced your right arm?

If you ever plan on selling the car, keep the AC.

Ya I was thinking the same... but my A/C works great so it would be staying on. But like Acceld said if your going to sell it in the Future leave it on.... but on the the other hand it hasn't worked for awhile so get it looked at and see what needs if it needs alot of stuff then then get rid of it... you'll need a A/C delete pulley though...

My A/C hasn't worked since I bought the car a year and a half ago. I think I could have used it maybe twice last summer. But I am thinking about having it checked out to see if it will be worth getting it up and running again. Problem is, in order to get it running, it will have to be converted to the newer style, as freon is banned in Canada.

Oddly enough I found quite a few shops in the GTA that still carry freon, for a bit of a price, but still hell of a lot cheaper than a conversion. I had mine charged up during the whole "garbage strike". I don't know why I never recharged it as when they did the leak down with the dye there were no leaks. I think I may have discharged it by accident when I took apart the engine... so that's what that hiss was lol... I know I'm an environmental monster blah blah.. I have a/c

huh??

Freon is $80 /lb ,our cars need 2 lbs(plus whatever cost is to change an accumulator)..A conversion cost between $150-$200(including a new accumulator)and $100 or less if you do it yourself..Or you can ask your friendly A/C guy to put in R12a which cost $15/can(need 2 cans)..Only drawback is its flammable

Hey, if ya got T-tops what the hell do ya need A/C for.

I have had the IROC since 1995 and have never used the A/C. May have needed it a couple of sweltering days but were all grown men and take the heat.

I pulled mine and love the extra room it has given me, plus the weight savings will help in the hp/weight ratio.

I had mine filled up again for about $95.

Where you getting $80/lb??? It's around $60/Kg when I did mine ie 2.2 lbs ie CDN. Only thing I'm not sure about is how much the price may have changed in a few years... but at the time for me, still cheaper than a conversion...

If you were in the states, hell yeah its expensive there, they got a EPA $12 surcharge on freon and supply/demand has it to a premium since freon is in limited supply.

Been there... I smashed my AC housing apart with a body hammer. Easily the best decision of my life. Changing spark plugs from under the hood > *.*

PS: As of today, the Delta is on the road and rollin' hard.
