Emmissions question...

If I were to buy a 2nd gen Camaro, would the owner have to provide an emmission test? Or would the car qualify as exempt? Some people say it's not exempt when changing ownership regardless of age?

Thx, Pacer

Its only exempt after 20 years.. it doesn't matter who owns it.

hes right ron..

although what they can hit you with is the car has to have all and i mean ALL the emission bs that it came with stock from the factory...if it had 4 cats it needs to have 4 cats to pass...mind you they may not be sticky on that..(nor they may not really check)..

but once its 20 years old it does become exempt from the testing..but not exempt from those mobile guys...

I think what he's asking is;

Does the car have to be emissions tested during a transfer of ownership even if its 20 years old and older?

Or does this only apply to cars 19 years and younger?

I think its up to the date of the manufacture. So technically your car has to be 21 to be exempt from the emissions ( I think) since the renewal is every year. I'm assuming that you would have to do emissions the same year the car turned 20 but not after that.. you'd have to double check.

sorry, that's still not very clear. :P When you change ownership on a car it has to get an emissions test done and it has to pass. You can't get a conditional pass on a car that you're planning on buying. The only time that the car is exempt from emissions (even when transferring ownership) is if it falls into that 'classic/antique' category where it has to be at least 20 years old.

Tecunically- no- at change of ownership no such previous emissions test must be provided for a car 20+ years old. Sometimes the clerks at the MOTC offices try to be difficult with this- but I think it's because they forget the look at the model year of the car (re-esplain it to them Lucy).

Beyond that, the only 2nd Gens. that were ever put up for emissions tests were 1980/81 models (in 1999 and 2000 respectively)- so if the 2nd Gen. you're talking about is 1979 or earlier- the MOTC can right-off go play with themselves.

Thx guys,
So if I go to buy a stock 2nd gen then I don't need to worry about smog testing when transferring the car to my name. I realize no test is req'd after 20yrs anyways.
I was just trying to clear up some mis-information.
