It depends on how much work you can do on it yourself. If you are not mechanically inclined then it will cost a lot. Like I said to you privately, it's cheaper to buy another car. This may be too much for you to start out wrenching on. Try some smaller stuff first like fixing problems. Don't worry, I was no different when I was younger. I bit off more than I could chew, thought I could do anything when I was 18. I couldn't but I didn't let that stop me. A little help and guidance can go a long way.
Where about's do you live? Might be someone from this fourm near by to help you out.
I am about to do an engine change/tranny change in a 3rd gen. If you want, drop by and watch or even help out. I've started more than a few people wrenching already. Once you get past that initial fear and a few techniques under your belt, there is no stopping you. I've seen more than a few guys not know the difference between left is lose, right is tight to doing anything. I'm in Ajax.
A big block fits so you can go as big as you want. Most folks stick with a small block which is limited to around 420 cubes.

I agree with 1/2". THe only way it would be worth it is if the body of your car is mint and you have all the options that you efer wanted in a car. THe other reason is if you are planning on putting a motor with twice as much power as stock anyway. A parts car would still be more practical though for the odd parts.
I agree with the rest. I've swapped out a 2.8 MPFI V6 with a carbed 305, and it is a fair bit of work. For someone who is starting out in the hobby, it would be better to start out with a V8. If you do decide to swap in a V8, I suggest buying a running V8 parts car and getting the parts you need off of it. It will save a lot of hassle in the long run, rather than trying to hunt down parts in a junkyard.
