Congratulations! Must be nice... our car is an '87 as well so this will be the last year. Did you have to use any "tricks" to get it to pass?

Just a tune up. And it passed with the JET chip installed.

I was not officially notified, however I did read an artical that mentioned 88 and newer cars are in the e-test for good.

This is right from the Drive clean website.

www.driveclean.com

Historic vehicles exempt from Drive Clean tests
Drive Clean’s recent decision to end its rolling age-based exemption for light-duty vehicles from emissions testing requirements only affects 1988 and newer models. They will stay in the Drive Clean program, no matter how old they are.

If your car is a 1987 or earlier model, it leaves the program permanently when it is 20 years old.

Cars currently registered as “historic” vehicles continue to be exempt from Drive Clean test requirements because of their age. An exemption will be recommended for vehicles of the 1988 and newer model years from all test requirements when they reach 30 years of age, if they receive designation as historic vehicles under the Highway Traffic Act.

Light-duty vehicles have been exempt from emissions testing when they were 20 years old, both for registration renewal and ownership transfer. A 1986 vehicle had its last emissions test in 2005 and a 1987 will have its last test in 2006.

1988 vehicles -- which require emissions tests in 2007 -- will need to be tested again in 2009 and every two years after that for registration renewal. Similarly, 1989 models will require testing in 2008 and every two years after that. As well, the requirement for a valid Drive Clean pass for ownership transfer will continue to apply to 1988 and newer models.

Hybrid vehicles continue to be exempt from all emissions tests.

Drive Clean has also sought public comment on a proposal that annual emissions tests be required beginning when a light duty vehicle is 12 years old for 1988 and newer models. No tests would be required for 1987 and older vehicles. However, no decision has been made on this proposal.

I'd love to get out to that. LAst time I ran it was in 1999 with some of the stuff done to it. This was PRE-CHIPPED and not tuned right. I ran a low 14 and a High 13 at the end of the day.

I'd like to get out there this year on a test and tune day to see if there's any change. I'm sure theres some hondas out there that will smoke me but I didn't put $37'000 in mods on my car

I'll never forget the day I ran those times. There was a kid there in a 98 civic hatchback. He said he spent $7'000 on a fartcan for his exhaust, an overpriced intake tube, and most notably, electronics. So he sits there and farts around with a laptop computer hooked into his ECM. After about 15 minutes of this he does his run. I think he ran something like a 19. He was happier than a pig in ****!!! Al I could think about was...$7'000??? 19 seconds??? I don't get it. If I or any of you put $7000 in mods in these cars, we could go to the moon. That's the thing with these old TPI push rod motors. There so simple to wake up. I don't see the point in spending money on sewing machines. Don't get me wrong, Honda's are an amazing and reliable car. But the things they do to them? At thats what burns me the most. These guys don't put any blood sweat or tears into them. It's daddys money, and Bill Gate's electronics. The whole point of hyping up the car is all but lost these days.

Well it's nice to know that 87's are now exempt from the e-test. I am just wondering though, I have had my 87 off the road for the last two years, so it missed the last etest. I would imagine that in order to get my plate renewal it is going to still require an e-test. What is the conditional pass worth these days?

Well, first you'd have to drop the stock TPI, then you could start to shoot for the moon, LOL.

I didn't feel like paying for the conditional so my car didn't have a sticker for it's last year or two - once it hit 20 I got a sticker w/out having it etested.

While I would agree there is more power to be had in aftermarket alternatives, there are a number of people that are running amazing times with the stock TPI on top. Check out the Corvette guys for example, there's quite a few '85-'91 TPI Vette's running some pretty wild times from mild bolt-ons and tuning alone. It's possible, but requires patients and work, something I'm not ready for. But it's possible.

Well make sure you get out to that May 27th meet ! Hylton (he'll respond here I hope) is just straightening out the last details for this gathering before it's posted. But it should be a blast. Saturday night will be the drags, I think it's $20 run from 6-11pm. Should be a good time to run/tune/watch, then benchrace afterwards.
You can get some updated times, and I think your what, 2 hours tops to Shannonville???
