too much cam?
I bought a cam over a year ago I was going to install it last summer but got busy with suspension stuff instead so the car looks and handles outstanding. But the TPI still falls flat in the usual place.
The cam is .533/.544 and 212/218 on 114. I've been thinking of getting a cam with a little less lift and avoid mandatory prom work.
Not that I don't want to get into burning my own proms I do one day. I just know that I won't have the time to do a proper job of it this summer.

there are a couple thing involved in getting the right cam.. your compression ratio, induction and exhaust.. i'm no genius about cam selection but that looks like a decent piece.. make sure your heads can take the lift though.. if its a stock head, it wont take the lift..
EDIT: on second thought, that is quite alot of lift.. try something around .480 lift.. .533lift is for 10:1+ compression motors

Rich, everyone's correct about the lift and stock spring's, they will think they are in a Rice Crispy comercial, Snap, Crackle and Pop

What cam is that? I cant find one even close to your listed spec's.

i thought the same thing.
thats a ton of lift for such a short duration. even the Super Profile L98 from slp duration is bigger at 218/219 but alot less lift
the closest i can find is for a LT1
COMP extreme CCA-212-218-12
212 218
.488 .495 1:1.5 rockers
.521 .528 1:1.6 rockers
112

hey guys thx for the comments. I really don't want to install the cam wrong we all know what a pain it is re &re'ing a TPI cam
I think its a comp cam and the lift is off because I am using 1.6 rockers so the lift quoted is with 1.6s. You can make a good argument for dumping the 1.6s in favor of 1.5s (given the lift on this cam).
I have a set of LS2 (LS6? don't remember now) beehive springs with comp cams retainers for the small diameter end. They are supposedly good for up to .600.
I'll unwrap the cam and post the specs later today.
I guess another way to approach this is how cam will a speed density 5.7 take before it starts to cause prom/emission/idle/other problems but still give enough gain to make it worth your while? Maybe look for one of these cams instead?
----------
... I should add I am swapping out the 700r4 for a t-56 this year (so much for those hot 60 foot times eh?
) May make a diff with this cam. Maybe not?

ok, the cam says 266hr stamped into it so comp cams web site says:
Xtreme Energy 266HR-14 Cam
Xtreme Energy 266HR-14 Cam, 1993-1996 GM LT1 & LT4 350
COM07-304-8 $269.99
Comp Cams now makes hydraulic roller cams for LT1 engines. This cam delivers enhanced horsepower and proven Comp Cams performance throughout your engines power range.
HYDRAULIC ROLLER-Best for original LT1 with stock Computers.
Valve Lift 0.500/0.510
Duration At .050 210/220
Lobe Separation 114°
So it is an LT1 cam after all. No problem I'll just pretend my L98 is an LT1
When I bought it I thought it was borderline requiring prom updates. probably could avoid without the 1.6 rockers?
Geez the receipt says Dec/2005 I have been sitting on this one for awhile.

I'm with Hawk on the valve springs. That cam would easily stack the OE springs. The car is also going to need PROM work or you'll have to two-foot it at stop lights. The 114 LSA helps but it's still not gonna be real happy.
Just my 2 cents

this cam stuff is a hassle
If I wasn't doing a tranny swap this year I would be doing this instead:

You had better measure the length of the dowel pin on the end of that cam. The LT1 cams have a longer pin to drive the water pump. It will carve a groove into the back of your timing cover if it's not the right length.

yes the dowel will have to be adjusted with a LT1 cam in a TPI.
PROM work will be minor with that cam, reset the TPS and IAC and you will prolly get away without any untill you got time to do it.
If ya dont want any PROM work then sell that cam and get this one, its almost the same spec's as your cam and requires no modifications.
