I bought an '85 when it was a year old which tells you how long I have been into 3rd gens.
The 3rd gen revolutionized pony cars. These days -- in a post LS1, a Viper and C5 world -- it is hard to imagine a world of no pony cars. A world where REAL performance was hard to find.
Back in '82 when the 3rd gen arrived it rocked the performance car world. No other words for it. The 3rd gen set a new standard for a balanced pony car where styling, performance, handling and comfort all met in a reasonably priced package.
What do I like about the 3rd gen?
- it looks like it is going fast even when parked
- handles like on rails
- stops like glue
- easy to work on (as long as you are not swapping cams
)
- reliable
- the IROC is a classic
What do I like about 3rd gens over on gens? I like all gens of Camaro each has great points about them. I just happen to like the 3rd gen best probably cause I was around when they were new.

I bought my '85 new in 1985, and I still have it. Was the first new car I bought. Always liked these cars since they first came out in '82.

That is an extremely rare bird you have there. Ever do a lookup on how many TPI T/As were made in '85?
I would probably still have my '85 (which was also very rare) if not for the fact a low life bottom feeding scumbag shipwreck of a human being with excrement for brains stole it and destroyed it.

Why I love 3rd gens...
I was 16 years old in 1989 and to me the 1989 Trans am GTA was the baddest car on the road...Finally 16 years later I was in a position to buy one...I searched untill I found the right "one" and bought it last summer...
(I almost bought a 1984 Trans am when I was 17 but the insurance company said the car or 17 year old driver had an average life expectence of 8 weeks,
needless to say i could not afford the $3000-$5000 a year they wanted to insure me...)

Because it looks like this and can hold its own on a race track. I like the 4th gen SS and the IROCs too but that's about it.

Tell ya what we'er gonna do, ROCK YOU!!!
Cause they go with the personality of all it's drivers and fit perfectly. I love parking it beside my trailer, gives me something to look at before I pass out p*ssed drunk. Looks good when I appear on that Canadian "Cops" show. I can always pick my pretty sister and hot cousins up when I'm driving it. I look good with the t-tops out from April - October, especially cause we match - my shirt comes off those same months. I can drive by the middle school, and ALL the girls look. In my head, it's the fastest car ever built. Man the list of resons go on and on. These cars flat out ROCK AND ROLL, just like Kiss or Helix blaring outta my speakers. I'm driv'in the LOVE GUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gimme an R - O - C - K. Whatcha got? ROCK!!! And whatcha gonna do? ROCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I first came to Canada I saw a dark blue IROC go rumbling by me. Never saw a car like it before. That was it. I was hooked and had to have one. 12 years later she is still with me.
Gotta say I love the lines, performance and look of the car. Definitely a home run for styling and performance.

lets see,
1st gen: too common.. too many people fix them up.. hard to be unique
2nd gen: dont really like the body lines and what not.. IMO, looks heavy and slow..
3rd gen: nice lines, it was in my price range at the time, ITS MINE!!! still uses the 1st gen motor(easy to work on)
4th gen: TOO EXPENSIVE for me.. dont like EFI.. cost too much to upgrade..

I know it's a VERY rare animal. Not sure how many were made in total, but I do know mine is one of only 38 TPI T/A's that came into Ontario in 1985. It's probably the only black one with burgandy/silver interior though. Not sure how many are left after all of this time, but I'll bet there are alot less than 38 left after 22 years.

Lol.. he has about 100 more HP at the wheels than I do and C5 brakes but on that lap I was about 3 feet off his *** coming out of 5b onto the straight and then he just pulled away - I need more power and the J65 brakes have to go.

the addiction started when i was six.I used to see a burgandy iroc every time i went into fredricton.I never really saw many camaro's around that i noticed...but this burgandy one stuck out every time i saw it. I dont remeber much about it,but just seeing the car sitting in the driveway when we drove past i fell for the lines.I've grew up in an F-body mind you...my dad owns a 71 trans am,but the 2nd gens just werent my thing at the time when i was old enough to buy a car.I wanted a 3rd gen for way to long not to get one. When i was 15 there was a berlinetta up the road from my house just sitting in the driveway. It had been sitting there for 2 years without moving.I was riding shotgun with my dad driving past the guys house and saw him outside putting a cardboard forsale sign in the window. That night i was at his house with my dad looking over the car.
$300 later i had me my dream..a 3rd gen camaro to call my own.Sure it was no IROC..but that didnt stop me from making it look like one

Hey Canadian250, my cousin has an 85 305TPI auto Trans Am. It's burgendy with a grey interior and is in pretty mint shape. It has the giant friggin bird on it.
I'm also a believer that the 3rd gens are the best looking of all the f-bodies. I personally like the Camaros a lot more then the T/A's. I also think the cars look a little budget without ground effects on them. Guess that why I have an IROC...

You should tell your cousin it's one of only 38. See my avatar? That's a pic of my hood
Car has 53K on the clock. Gotta love the "big chicken
" on the hood.
I like to see a t/a with a bird. That comes from the 2nd gens I guess. They always looked good with that original bird on the hood. It was an option in 85 to get the bird put on the car.

I will be honest, third gens, I never really paid much attention to them. I have two first gens and a fourth. I think it was the low horsepower rating that turned me off. Last year that all changed. When I was lying in the hospital bed I started thinking. As everyone knows, when you have a life altering event happen you start to reflect on your life. What you have done, what you haven't done and what you would like to do. I thought I would like to get into autocross. A friend of mine does it and I have been with him a few times and really enjoyed it. Only problem was, I didn't have a car I could do it in. I have a 92 Firebird but I knew an Iroc would be even better. So, the search was on. Well I found one but now I think it is too nice to do the autocross thing. From the moment I first started the car and drove it, I was enthralled. The sound of the L98 with no cats, the torque and the handling.....unbelievable! I love driving that car and yes there are some third gen snobs out there, those that think the car is sub standard, heck, I was one of them, but not any longer! I love the car and I really love driving it. I am also very lucky that I have a choice!

OMSC usually has a lap day/school at the DDT in or about April. Cost is approx. $200 which includes the track fee, school fee and lunch. Not a lot of money for a day at a track and worth a try as you might enjoy it more than autocross. I find autocross to be quite annoying and not worth spending a day at it just to get in maybe 5 runs of about 60 seconds each.

Because the Third Gen introduced the only factory Digital Camaro !
To be a bit more to the point,......... It was the massive variety of options the Third Gen offered. First Gen is WAY to expensive for most guys and the Second Gen was to bulky. Fourth Gen; They are ALL the same...... Either you got a base V6 or a loaded Z28. ( Ya', there was a 'SS' - but you get the idea ! ) As soon as I got my 95Z I customized it so that it was like no other ! I can count a minimum of 6 different style and colored Third Gen door pulls never mind the 3 different type rear view mirrors, 5 different clusters, 3 different dome lights and countless drive-train combinations over the years.
It's all about the options ! You can look into 20-30 different Third Gens in a single car show and I'm willing to bet that NONE of them are the same !

They look great, they have pretty good performance, but most of all they are cheap. 1st, 4th and even some 2nd gens are pretty expensive anymore.

Well, being 16 years old now, i cant say i really grew up with any new camaro's, seeing the last camaro rolled off the line when i was 12 years old. None the less, when i was 14 my mom got a 1980 trans am, and not long later i got into them, which lead to my 89 iroc i have now.
I went for the third gens because:
-They are friggen gorgeous
-Cheap
-Easy to work on (already cammed, added headers, ported tpi etc)
-Their my car, so that makes them special to me haha
-Others were wayy to expensive.
Dont like really any second gens, i like the first gens aslong as their mostly originaly stance, with a big block, and lots of power. true muscle car right there, but like the late 4th gens 98-02 because they look clean, have nice hoods, and ls1's.

I think of thirdgens as kinda like the transition pony car between old and new tech. Dropping in the sbc of your choice is easy... Oh ya, and they look friggin amazing from every angle.

Re: Liking Third gens
One of the older guys in high school drove his Dad's brand new 82 Camaro pace car in one day..... 8 years later I tracked one down and bought it from an original owner. I've had mine 17 yrs and I also own an 89 IROC 350.
They look great and one day will be future classics... esp the IROCs.
The first gens are hard to find and very expansive.
The second gens look outdated and bulky.
The fourth gens are OK, buy share a lot of similarities with other cars of their era.
Fortunately, there is more restoration stuff coming available each year for third gens...
