Rear Hatch "shocks"/"pneumatics"

Hey, It seems as though the lifts on my rear hatch have worn out, they no longer hold the hatch open. According to Crappy tire charges 44.99/lift so thats 90 bux to replace them. I was wondering if they can be repaired if its just a seal or something and if not, anyone who's parting out a car, i'd be interested in your lifts if they work. thanks.

And don't buy the cheapest schit you can find either.

The Walmart ones will come down on your head shortly after they'er installed; this is particularly enjoyable when you're trying set total timing with the engine spinning in your face at 3 grand.

Re: Rear Hatch "shocks"/"pneumatics"

I see youre in Toronto. Look up CAPS auto parts. They have a year's warranty on theirs. For $80. Crappy tire, if they will sell you a set for $90! get it, thats cheap. It has a life time warranty. I was quoted like $160 on a pair. Maybe they're on sale?

When you tell them what its for, pick the heaviest hatch you can think of. Specify a 1987 GTA, with spoiler, rear defog, and rear wiper, get the works.

If you go the caps route, do what i did, keep the receipt, for the 1 year warranty, install your new ones, and 8 months down the road, exchange your old ones. Tell them they wore out. 8 months down the road you can pull off that they wore out...

Sneaky Sneaky. i suppose getting the shocks for the heaviest hatch is good idea, didn't even think of that. i'll check out the CAPS place, however. if CDN Tire sells them to me wont they be like Monroe or Motomaster or something? same applies with CAPS, unless they sell me Chevrolet shocks, when i return the worn out ones for a false warranty, they wont match.

Re: Rear Hatch "shocks"/"pneumatics"

Hey i think its an absolutely reidiculous price, so why not be sneaky?

Anyways, no Cdn Tire ARENT motomaster or some crappy shock, they are the good ones. I dont even remember the name, but its like Strong Arm or something like that. A very popular name.

Caps has the same one.

Re: Rear Hatch "shocks"/"pneumatics"

I replaced my hood shocks with ones from CT in the summer. One of the ones I bought was scratched, and dirty when I took it out of the plastic sleeve. Obviously someone had returned their old one and somebody at the store just put it back on the shelf. Word to the wise here people, if you buy these things from CT give them a quick look before you buy them to make sure their new. It might save you a trip back to the store.

Re: Rear Hatch "shocks"/"pneumatics"

Unless its really well packaged and obviously sealed, like those things you have to open with scissors, i have made it a habit to open it up and inspect the part.

Like if it comes in a box, or is just "sealed" with one thing of tape.

Everybody knows they reshelf their stuff, but they still honour their warranty on these. I know a few guys that change em up about every 3 years.

Re: Rear Hatch "shocks"/"pneumatics"

I've been through quiter a few sets of them. I have better luck with the hatch ones that the hood for some reason. THe hatch ones last for four or five seasons and then start to go. The hood ones I only get 2-3 seasons and they start drooping.

As a quick fix you can put a coupe of hose clamps around the crimped area of each strut and it helps hold them up but you lose the lifting effect as it adds friction everywhere so you have to lift the hatch fully to open every time. Just a thought

Oh it's in there pretty good..lol

Some dickweed at my friend's shop overtighted the lugs when they were putting tyres on my truck.

The crown piece on the locking lug nut sheared right off so I had to smash a socket onto the nut and put some heat to to it to get the bastards off - all four of them.

I'm in Toronto and they're in Stouffville so it wasn't worth the time and fuel to go back up there..lol

Re: Rear Hatch "shocks"/"pneumatics"

They may have been lazy and just used the impact wrench to put them on as well as take them off, so when they put them on they overtightened them in a way by accident, although they probably knew it was going to happen anyways.

That is damn impressive damage there...I want the impact gun that can get the lugs that tight!! I hope that picture is of the last lug removed.
