Hey, at the moment my camaro has no muffler, its off from that part and on. i have the muffler and whatnot but since my car is old enough not to worry about emissions testing, i was told i could do whats called a "straight pipe" setup. basically replacing the muffler with a pipe that splits i guess into the 2 exhaust pipes. i was wondering if anyone has done this, also, if anyone knows of a place where these muffler replacements can be bought. if anyone know anything about this, your help is much appreciated.

 

I once eliminated my muffler but left cat converter in place and I only drove it like that 1 block and came home and put muffler back on ... totallt obnoxious sounding ... If you want to at least put muffler eliminator baffles on they give a nice sound.

 

Well, it doesnt sound bad right now actually. I like the sound and i'll always have the option of putting the muffler back on. i will probably run a cat but do i have to fabricate the pipe myself or can you pick one up somewhere?

I checked it out, but i don't know what the piece i'm looking for is called exactly. is it a resonator? are resonators different from mufflers? what would it be called?

 

It's up to you but there's a big fine if the cops/mto catch you w/out a converter and they do look for that.

Basic rule is that even though the car is exept from testing, all the emissions crap has to be there. Obviously they may not notice if the smaller stuff is gone but cats are easy to check even if it's been hollowed out. So make sure you leave the cat on there.

 

Yeah, the cat will stay on, i didnt mean That type of "straight pipe" but i didn't know what else to call it, i guess muffler delete would have been better.

 

I use a Dynomax Bullet style muffler in my I-Pipe before it goes over the axle.

Hooker Headers
Custom 3" Y-Pipe
3" Dynatech Cat
3" I-Pipe w/Bullet muffler inline
Dumps over axle for now...

 

Thats not a bad idea, with the bullet style muffler. however how would you mount that? like the stock exhaust has the 1 in, 2 out setup. so even if i was able to put the bullet muffler in the exhaust higher up the line, i'd have to dead with replacing the stock muffler with some tubes or something. maybe its not worth the trouble, i'll just get a nice muffler and thats the end of it.

 

I don't know if opening up your exhaust is going to help you out so much. Example: I had a 350 TBI in my truck with 2.5" true duals, 2 cats, 2 hi-perf mufflers. As the exhaust system wore out, the crappy Midas pipes started to rot, so at one point I had no tail pipes after the mufflers. Just the loss of the tailpipes was enough to make a noticable loss of torque due to less than optimal backpressue (at least that's what I figure, anyone can feel free to argue). So, unless you are making TONS of power and need huge exhaust flow, my guess is you will probably be ok with a quality hi-flow muffler and a high flow cat (or one that is hollowed out, not that I condone that). If you have a stock GM cat converter still, you will probably want to replace that, as they will be a restriction...and they're worth a good buck if you sell them to a scrap guy. If you want to spend some money, my brother installed the Flowmaster American Thunder system on his car with headers and it sounded excellent.

 

yeah, i'm not looking to get mad performance out of my exhaust at the moment, i just want it to sound good for the time being. later down the road, depending on funds and the engine/parts i may need to open it up a bit.

 

The Bullet doesn't go in the stock location. It goes in the I-pipe BEFORE the axle then the pipe goes over the axle and can either dump there or you can use a splitter and have dual tips. If you want to use a muffler in the standard location, go look for some Flowmaster or Magnaflow mufflers.

 

yeah, i know it doesnt go in the standard position, i was just wondering what do you do with the space where the muffler was. do you know where to get a sort of "muffler delete" kit? like a splitter that replaces the muffler.

 

You get someone to weld some custom exhaust pipes or you do it yourself. I haven't heard of any "delete kits."

 

Hey, i finally got a video of the Camaro. we took out the dash today, suprise half the bolts/screws were missing and alot of the wires were just cut. one of the previous owners really messed this thing up. anyways it will give you an idea of how the exhaust sounds without the muffler. granted finishing the exhaust even without a muffler will change the sound. these videos show the exhaust finishing where it would normally meet up with the muffler.

Granted my friend was being a bit of a ***** revving it but hey, the motor wasn't completely warm yet either so maybe it was for the better. there are a couple more videos if you go to my youtube page or w/e. the quadrajet choke sticks so unless you pop the hood and press down the "hammer" or whatever you want to call it, it will rev at twice the normal idle for a good while.

 

It's much like the SLP loudmouth system. It's a Y splitter from the over axle pipe to make dual tips. I'll be getting my exhaust guy to make that up for me and run some sort of tips. I was debating 4thgen tips but now I'm not sure...

I'll post a sound clip when it's done of course.

 

yeah, that y-splitter is what i was referring to as the "muffler delete" or straight pipe (even though i believe that straight pipe is no cat exhaust). as for tips, well we got some brand new 18" long 4" wide polished stainless tips with the car, so we'll be putting those on. I don't have a muffler guy yet either, i dont have any guys. this is my first car sort of, so i havent had the time to get acquainted with any shops in my area. i don't even know of any specialty ones. but i know a couple mechanics, i'm sure they'd know.

Oh by the way, do the loudmouths even come in in the y-pipe / thirdgen setup (1in 2out)? aren't they like "bullet" style mufflers?
