Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle

And here is the wiring kit I bought American Autowire Hwy 15 kit. The kit is a bit of overkill for this car at this point but it was only a few bucks more than the kit below and it can easily handle anything I could ever want to do with the car as you can see. The fuse panel itself is only slightly larger than their lesser kits so Im not getting much of a weight penalty. Im starting from scratch with the wiring as there is no wiring whatsoever in the car at this time. By all accounts the American Autowire kits have better quality hardware and fuse panels than their competitors so I went with them. So this is he next big thing. Thats it for now thanks for stopping by http://www.americanautowire.com/shop...-15-wiring-kit

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle

The car will require a switch box mounted between the seats for all switches as when belted in I cannot reach the dash. I dug around all over the net at pics of vintage race cars looking for something cool in this regard but came up empty. A box is a box no two ways about it. Do more standing around thinking than working. In the end I cut the bottom out of a 50cal ammo box I had lying around. It has a nice hinge on it and is very sturdy. At one time I thought of plastic but then thought if a short and a fire developed the box would melt The key start is there (for some security) along with the master elect cut off. The box is big but potentially I'll be putting headlight, wiper and brake fan switches there also.

I also bought my new Superlight rear brake calipers to replace my old mismatched ones before our dollar sinks out of sight. Wilwood said my old pads would fit, they wont. But hey isnt it just a great day when you go pick up something as cool as a new set of brake calipers? love it!

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle

When you mentioned Peterborough and the 80's, it caught my attention. I used to spend the summers there (at Beavermead Park) and used to street race (when it wasn't so politically incorrect) in my...wait for it...flat black 68 Chevelle. G60 on the front, L60 on the back. 400 sbc and TH400 and an open diff with 3.08 gears. 0-30 took about a minute but once it hit 3000 rpm it flew.
Your story brought back a few memories. Love your build. I've often thought the stock car look for the street would be pretty cool (even if I am over 50!). Have an eye on a 61 Pontiac Strato Chief 2 door that would make a excellent "stock car".
Good luck with the project. Maybe we'll see you out there this summer cruising.

Flat Black 68 Chevelle haha how cool is that??

I love street driven "stock cars". A 61 strato chief? big poncho engine, 4 spd whats not to like ? Paint it up like Smokeys '62

Ok, have the collector extensions welded on the headers, the one piece tailpipe/muffler section mounted in four places and the tailpipe exits trimmed so the exhaust is finished.

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle

The 3.25 Tru Track is in. Calipers mounted, plumbed and pads installed. Diff filled with 75W 140 Royal Purple diff fluid. Rear Penske's filled to 90 psi nitrogen and mounted with the Watkins Glen set up left in them. I got the Mark Williams billet yoke with the pulley on it so I can run an old school belt driven rear end cooler pump which I have but it's not necessary for the car to run so I'll leave it off for now. Im done out here.

I cut the bottom half of the rear drive shaft loop off and fabbed a removable replacement. The drive shaft was a bitch to stick through the loop and get it on when on the lift . I couldn't imagine doing it at the track on jack stands so that's what I came up with. Drive shaft that came with the car slipped right in and is the proper length, no mods required. Love it

So now I can get the car off the lift and down onto jack stands, fully open the doors and get going on the final phase, mucking around with the pedals and wiring. I started doing the wiring earlier but on the lift I could only open the doors about a foot so it just wasn't working for all the wiring that goes on inside the car. The lift is old school and the car is so low you have to jack the car up and eff around on your hands and knees to get it on there, not something you want to do repeatedly.

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle

Done messing around under the car. Put nylocks, lock washers and loctite everywhere. Finished the grille off while still on the lift. In every pic I've posted so far the grille has been just sitting there. The dummy headlights were painted pieces of cardboard held in with masking tape lol. Two hundred bucks at Ground Up got me the necessary hardware and trim pieces to install it all properly. Everything is locked down tight and is not going to blow off at 130.

So it's FINALLY off the lift and on to the final phase of wiring, playing with the pedals then a fire up. A pretty big day in the shop really.

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle

Got it up on the trailer last Sunday. A little scraping of exhaust but it made it. It has never been up there before. Have to weld on some loops for tie downs to the rear frame rails and put some D rings on the trailer, nothing too big. 4500lb winch I bought from Costco for $50!! didnt even breathe hard and it didnt rip the front bumper off! lol

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle

Add some princess auto flip down jacks on the rear of trailer. Keeps it from squatting when unloading and also lets you winch to load when you are not connected to truck.

When are you testing? Let me know and I might be able to come.

Are you coming to Mosport this weekend. Sent you tickets and schedule.

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle

What do you mean flip down jacks Doug? I go to PA all the time and Ive never seen them. That was the first time on the trailer. I need to fool around with it to find what it needs. In the pic we have the front of the trailer jacked up. If anything it needs longer ramps it wants to scrape the centre of the car where the beavertail transitions to the flat deck. Im a ways away from testing maybe Sept. Not sure what were doing this weekend we'll see how the weather is.

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle

Light weight load. Pull the spring pin and they rotate 90 degrees for storage. Weld on the side of frame. Screw jack handle on top for length adjustment like the tongue jacks. They might actually be meant for a tongue jack on front of light weight trailers.

I used them to stabilize the whole trailer so it did not change height or angle when loading.

Well I'm happy for Doug. I really enjoyed reading through his build.

Why don't you link some of those publications? It should be obvious that I haven't seen them.

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle

The tires in all the pics Ive ever posted are four plus yrs old now. David the Nascar guy has always said he doesn't like the Hoosier bias's and I should at least get a set of Goodyear bias's. I took his advice and contacted a local GT2/3 racer who sells used Goodyears from the Nascar Canadian Tire Series cars (NCATS) for $200 a set they are supposed to last two weekends.

The Good boots are a #D2265 and are supposed to be 1.5 to 2 sec a lap faster than the Hoosiers around 2.5 mi Mosport. I saw why David doesnt like the Hoosiers. You can see how soft the sidewall is, no pic but the Goodyear has a substantially stiffer sidewall! By hand the Goodyear sidewall will only move about 1/4" and the whole sidewall moves as one, way stiffer.

This was backed up by David. He said his team mounted a GoPro to watch the front tires. He said with the soft sidewall the driver would have to "wait on the tire" to get finished rolling over before the car would start to actually turn. David said he wants to send me up a few sets of Cup radials from Sonoma or the Glen and make it really go. Im not there yet.

The NCATS series grew out of the old Canadian CASCAR late model series. The cars are a Late Model type 3 link with a glass body not a Nascar truck arm/metal body. Early NCATS had a Camaro clip. They run across the country probably a third of the races are road courses. As well as their own races they are support races for the Nascar Trucks at Mosport and for the Toronto Indy. They have a 600hp Nascar spec engine and GM single piston Late Model type brakes. Min weight 3000.

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle

Had a harness bar and passenger seat mounts professionally installed. There was nothing whatsoever to mount the passenger seat to so we mirrored the nascar tubular steel seat mounts from the drivers side. New RJS 5 point belts with center twist release on both sides. Originally wanted the Simpson belts cause their a little more Nascarie but the RJS had the same rating and were WAY cheaper , whats up with that?

Future plans call for a full fire suppression system but for now I bent up a little U shaped aluminum mount on the brake for a fire extinguisher and zip tied it in. When needed you just rip it out. I tested it twice works great. Even when the suppression system gets here I will keep this one. It's not in the way at all when driving or entering/exiting the car. Handy to put out a fire where the system doesnt reach like a brake fire or a little grass fire underneath the car or something.

Re: My other car, the Nascar 69 Chevelle

In Nov 2014 made it out to Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga Ont. between monsoons. A tight dead flat 3km course with one half decent straight. At that point Mosport was closed for the season so I took what I could get.

The good? Car has BIG ***** all over the place VERY fast and power all over the rpm range. No flat spots whatsoever carburetes excellent. Chassis is very poised never gets upset. Quick left right transitions or changing your line mid corner is met with a "hey no sweat, whatever you wanna do" attitude from the car. No grip grip grip gone bullshit at all. When it starts to slide its very gradual and easy to modulate with your right foot. Very confidence inspiring a car you could drive the livin' hell out of. love it.

The bad? The first session when I put my foot in the brakes after a couple of laps the car almost shook my eyes out of my head so I went in. Figured out I must be rear wheel hopping so I took a bunch of back brake out of it. fixed. Then when I layed into the brakes it was very darty, not good at all. Later on the phone David said I have too much toe out. But because of this at the time I couldnt charge corners to any real degree. Oh and even with my $$ custom roadrace pan oil pressure drops from 60 to 20 in the quick left rights. I was hoping I wouldnt have to put the Accusump on but.... Then it started to pump oil out the breather which dripped down on the collectors and made a nice smoke screen out the back of the car. Time to call it a day. Yes I neglected to put baffles inside the valve covers covering the holes that lead to the breather....effed that up. ez fix though.

All in all after all this slugging I was delighted to finally drive the thing, took the wife out she thought it was awesome too.

It is exactly the way I envisioned it, I love the look and the flat black will def stay.
