I asked if anyone was burning their own chips a while ago and got no response. I would like to get into it in the near future but don't have any coin to purchase the neccessary tools of the trade. Iwas just wondering if anyone else in Ontario was interested in doing this and at what stage they were at?

I've been considering it but that's it. Did you read the big article Traxion did? I'm wondering how much more complicated it is than it sounds.

My brother is getting into doing it.
www.tunercatz.com has alot of info on it and lots of software

I have a friend getting into it!! he just got the burner for christmas. There's a couple of programs you have to buy on top of the standard program that comes with it! Each car need its own program or something.. I will keep you posted while we proceed..

Good question. I was in fact going to start looking into it this winter sometime. I have a laptop, ready access to just about any software that is available and can probably pickup any necessary h/w pretty cheap (I work in the software biz). Originally posted by zedder 1 9 9 0

Only thing stopping me is knowledge of calibrations, vector intersects, etc. I am clueless as to how GM executes run-time management of the system and need to come up to speed on data management as well.
The more I think about it the more it sounds like work (yuK). I always get to this point then say "forget it, I'll buy a chip and save myself the headache".

Well, like I said I plan on getting into it soon. Originally posted by 92zeddar

Performance Resource wants about $250 for a chip that will supposedly net 28-32hp and 30-35lbs torque on my car. (I'd be interested in a dyno report to back up that claim ?!?!). That is pretty expensive -- I can buy a driveshaft for that kind of money. For that kind of coin I will find a way to do it myself.
I was going to start scoping out this PROM issue by searching the 3rd gen archives and following the PROM Board to pickup on the common vector and flashing issues.
I think I will find some freeware 'reader' software off the net so I can expose myself to the GM system capabilities. This will be software that understands the data feed to your diagnostic outlet on the car and runs on a laptop that is connected to the car while it is running. Guess I'll have to find a connector as well.
It will take me some time to get up to speed but I'll share what I find when I find something that works. I suspect it gets down to locating the right tool to manipulate the calibration vectors and flash the PROM. The rest should be fairly straight forward.
have a nice day,

Palric, thats a really nice formula!

Yah it is a rare unit. I spent alot of time looking for it (2-3 years) and it has a few neat options as well. I can thank the previous owner for the incredible finish -- he had a complete re-paint done including pulling all trim and lights plus end to end wet-sanding. His loss, my gain. But I digress...Originally posted by zedder 1 9 9 0

I've spent a few minutes looking around the PROM threads. I've found an adaptor/connector for the ALDL for under $100 which is pretty good start. I'll look for some software next week. Don't plan on buying anything yet, prefer to more clearly understand what ALL the issues are first. I want to get a driveshaft and a set of aluminum drums first.
It will be pretty cool to write my own timing and fuel maps though. Ought to be able to increase fuel mileage by quite abit I'd say ?
