setting my timing....

to set the timing up and down which way do you turn the distributer, i know its suppose to be set on 6* and should idel at about 600rpm's when its warmed up but i need to know which way to turn the distributer to set it up or down, Thanks for you help -Don

Don,

The procedure is to disconnect the EST bypass connector, and set the timing to 6* BTDC. Shut the car off and reconnect the EST Bypass connector.

That said, CCW will advance the timing, CW will retard the timing.

Don,

Locate a single wire connector tan/black (IIRC) behind the paas side strut tower. Unplug it to set the base timing.

wait i just read your earlier reply, so i start the car, unplug the wire, set the timing then turn the car off and plug the wire back in?? right?? i hope so geezus

Yes....the reason you do it this way is so that the SE light will go out.

Dumb question - please forgive me - what if you simply moved the distributor without disconnecting the EST connector? Would it still 'advance' or 'retard' the timing?

Not a dumb question, but something I've never tried, my guess would be that the basetiming vs spark curve would be off by how many degrees you moved the distributor...i/e the timing curve would be too agressive or too late.

Again, I don't know for sure, just guessing. I would bet that Glenn or Grumpy, or any of the other PROM burners could tell you for sure.
