for that much get a cheap laptop and Craig Moate's software. Build a 2 transistor cable and you are there. Add a prom burner and Tunercat or Winbin and custom burn your own chips. Check out the Prom board for more info and links. cheers, Bob
ok first off i have no idea what a 2 transistor cable is. And cheap laptop. Never seen a cheap one. All the stuff u have listed is going to be alot more than what that scanner costs.
You can get a cheap laptop off of ebay or the local used computer store. All you need is a 486, should be less than $100. If you don't want to build the cable, you can buy one for about $50. And, of course, the software is free. You don't need the rest of the stuff until you are ready to start burning your own chips.
Here is a link to Craig's website.

These guys have it right. The auto x-ray is a decent little tool to get a look at what is happening in the ECM. But it is nowhere near as powerful and useful as a laptop running scanning software.
As these guys already suggested, your best bet is to buy a cheap laptop off ebay or from a local computer show or something. It is basically impossible to buy a laptop that is too old to run scanning software at this point. Stuff that archaic is being collected as antiques at this point
Seriously, even a 486 laptop w/ a few megs of RAM is overkill for these purposes.
I have yet to try to the moates free software myself, but assuming project 'get my old dinosaur laptop running' is successful that will change in a couple weeks. Lots of people swear by it though, and i think you can get the source code if you're into that thing so you can modify it to suit your needs.
