How do you pull your engine?
Can I lift it by my headers? If not what do you use?
Can I pull the tranny out at the same time?

I usually either use the lift points if theyre still installed or put a grade 8 bolt in the corners of the engine with chain through them and lift from that. You can do it with the tranny still attached but its a bitch, you're better off just unbolting the tranny.
Can I lift it by my headers?
Yes, but it's a very bad idea. In other words, no.
If not what do you use?
The factory lift points. Or as suggested earlier, some bolts threaded into the front and rear of the heads. If it's a carb'd motor, I like using that lift plate that bolts in place of the carb.

Yes, but it's very helpful to have a tilt mechanism if you're going to do it that way. But it saves having to undo the bellhousing bolts, which are not fun/easy without a lift.

If you pull the tranny too, make sure you're hoist is deep enough so that when you lift up, it doesn't pull the hoist into the nose of the car...

6 - start cutting wiring harnesses and vacuum lines cuz they are in the damn way
7 - pick up more beer
8 - pass out on floor, wake up under car in the morning, perfect, now you can do the bellhousing bolts

i'm getting ready to do this since my 305 went bad. but i'm taking off my intake and headers and getting all the wiring harness stuff out of the way. if you are gonna re-use the tpi system you might as well keep the wiring harness. then when you get the intake off you can use one of those lift plates that sits where the intake should be.

After you remove the accesories from the front of the engine, bolt the lift chain to the front & back of the cylinder heads. If you want to pull the trans with the engine you will need a tilt device because you really have to get the nose up & the tail down to get it out. Make sure you remove the radiator before pulling the engine, so you don't damage it. I put my engine in with the trans installed & it was a B*T*H.

All engine extractions require friends and beer.

I pulled my 305 with the tpi off and tranny and bellhousing off. it went out pretty easy. to pull it out i had a plate made that bolted to the 4 holes on the intake where the fuel rails went and it had a hook on it. it was centered good and i had total control of the engine coming out. putting the 350 in was a lot different. i installed my finished tpi onto the engine put my slp headers on and put my clutch and lt1 bellhousing on then put it into the car. i put a chain on the rear passenger side of block. there was a bracket already there from the new engine. i put the other chain on the front drivers side intake where the bolt threads into for the clip that holds the wiring for the alt. i didnt put my TB on though. it was a real tight fight and it has to be angled just right but i did get it in. ohya there was a lot of budweiser cans lying around afterwards along with a first aid kit.
I just got done pulling my engine and reinstalling it. I did it myself, without help. Pulled the engine and tranny as one piece and all accessories on except A/C (never had it) and power steering pump (didn't feel like making another mess with the fluid).
I got an engine leveler from Northern Tool for about $40 and the engine/tranny slid right out, just kept tilting it tranny down while it came foreward. Installing is just the reverse, went right in and had the passenger SLP header bolted to the engine (driver side header won't clear the front I beam going in). All in all it went smoothly. You may want to get help when it comes time to reinstall it, someone who knows how to operate the hoist and can take directions is a big help (my wife can't do either).
