code 42, help before I shoot my car.
ok, it a 92 350 TPI. I have ported the plenum, removed smog, and a/c. I have added bbk afpr set at 50 psi, msd coil, jet air foil, and k&n cone filter.
I set the tps at 0.71 for sd cars. When I start the car it acts like it is runnin on about 6 clyinders. It has bad throttle response.
I checked the codes and it set 33, and 42. I now the 33 is the map sensor and the computer will set it when ever anything else is wrong.
The code 42. I replace the igniton module with a new accel unit.
All the wires are connected, the coil and plug wires are on good.
The car backfired thought the intake, then died. I started it back up and it still would idle rough.
now the car wont even start, and I still get code 42.
I need help guys

Have you verified your base timing? Is your ESC plugged in by the P-side firewall? Recheck all plugs connectors.
Did this happen after your ignition mods? or did it run fine after mods then start doing this at a later date?

This happend after I installed the msd coil. I installed the Ignition module after it throw the code 42.
the esc is plugged in, and all the plugs and connectors are attached good.
I have not checked the base timing. What would be right for the 92 350 TPI?
I did a search about code 42, and got some good info. Some people just replaced the whole distributor. I dont want to do that.
I tried erasing the codes by disconnecting the battery, but I read in a post that it may take at least 10 mins for the charge in the computer to die out. I will try it again for a longer time.
Did the back fire thought the intake hurt anything? and is it possible that the new msd coil fried the original ignition module.
I have not checked the old one to see if it was bad, I just replace it thinking for sure it was it.
thanks for any help you can give me.

I believe the timing on SD is about the same, either way 6° is about what you want. The backfire SHOULDN'T have hurt anything... Unless you see physical damage you're probably alright (If it was super severe its a possibility it got to the map but unlikely)
Do you have a stock coil to put back in and see if it works right?
That will at least tell you if the distrib needs to come out or not.

yeah, I still have the stock coil. Should I remount it or just plug it up and try it?
If the module and coil is good, what else could be wrong with the distributor?

any chance the MSD coil could have been bad when I installed it?
Trust me when I say I have checked the connections to the coil. I have checked and rechecked.
I will let you know if the old coil does the trick. If it is the coil, summit is going to be sending me a new one.

well, I put the old coil back on and it didnt make a difference.
the motor will not start, so I cant check the base timing. Everything seems to be connected good, including vaccum lines.
Im going to pull a plug and wire and see if it is getting fire. I know the motor is getting fuel.
Could it be the computer, and if so how can I check if it is bad?
This is driving me nuts.

Ok, I pulled the #1 plug and put the wire on it, I cranked it over and got spark.
Ok, I put the motor on TDC, installed the dist with the rotor pointing to the #1 plug. I put everything back together, and tried it. The motor just cranked, but did not start. I also tried turning the dist to advance, and retard the timing. This did not help.
I removed the plugs, They were a little dirty. The #6 plug was about fouled out.
I wasnt sure if the motor at TDC was on the intake or exhaust stroke, So Im going to pull the valve cover and try it again. I will put it on TDC and see if the intake valve or exhaust valve is up.
IF the dist or connections were bad, I wouldnt think that I would have spark at the plugs. The dist should be good right.
what am I missing. I need help.
thanks guys.
