Will distributor out of 87 LG4 work in a 90 TPI?

My friend recently rebuilt his engine replaced the distributor also since it had frozen up in his 90 IROC 350. He got one out of a 87 Monte Carlo SS (LG4). Now he has a persistent code 43 and it runs like crap! It will idle ok for awhile, then start idling like crap. It spits and sputters when driving it. The timing is at 6* initial so thats not the prob. He has already replaced the knock sensor too...with no luck! Any help is great!!

Monte Carlo SS engine and distributor

I am not sure about the distributor but it should not be a difference since they are both computer controled but like i said, not sure. May need to change over the module or something.

What i am sure of is that the were absolutely NO LG4's in any Monte Carlo SS's. All monte Carlo SS's 1983-1988 came with the L69 motor.

The IROC should have a roller cam, not sure about the dizzy from the Monte. If it's not a roller cam, the gear on the cam will eat the gear on the dizzy.

Is the EST wire (tan/white) connected?

The 87SS (L69) distributor gear can be run on the stock roller cam.

I'm pretty sure the 87 SS distributors were the large in cap HEI. I know they were on the 85 and 86 models,, and don't think they went to the small remote coill HEI. If he converted over from the 90's remote coil dist, the connectors would be different, if this is so he either ditched the 90 remote coil and ran the in cap coil HEI, or bought an aftermarket HEI large cap that allowed him to use the remote coil. Anyway, if he or who ever sliced the wiring and it's not a good solid connection there,, sounds like that could be the problem. Anyway,, it would work, and certainly if the distibutor pluged right into the existing wiring harness. That is unless somthing was internally wrong with 87 dist. I'd sure check the wiring from dist. to ECM (this includes inside the cap to the module) before replacing anything - even if the wiring is not spliced.
