Car sputters and backfires??
Car sputters and backfires??
My car runs very bad. It spits and sputters and backfires. If i hold the RPM's at 800 or above it seems to smooth out. However in order to increase RPM's i must feather the gas peddle down. If i hit the gas at all it sputters and backfires. I cannot check the timing because my car will not start if i have the EST (tan w/black striped wire) unplugged. The car will also die if the MAF is unpluged. There is a brand new fuel pump, fuel filter, heads, IAC, PCV, Oxygen sensor and other sensors that were that were replaced within a year include, TPS, rotor, distributor cap, plug wires, spark plugs. If any one has any ideas please help. My scanner software shows no wierd data BLM's are around 128 and Integrator is at about 128. Could this be because i did not set the IAC motor? I cant set it because the car runs so poorly. the TPS is at .54 give or take .075.
Thanks any ideas or help is greatly appreciated,
Jake

Loosen your distributor, and have a buddy try to start the car, rotate your distrib back and forth untill you can get it to fire and immediatly set your timing.
It certainly sounds timing related.

My car was doing nearly the exact same thing recently. From idle to about 1500 my car would sputter and backfire. And whenever I let off the gas at any speed it would backfire horribly. Sometimes it would be okay, and sometimes it would run terribly. I replaced nearly every sensor on the car, and it was still acting really goofy, which led me to think it was the engine computer. So I decided to go ahead and replace it...and whala...it fixed it. Everything started working right again. It took me forever to figure it out because it wasn't giving me any weird codes or anything.
That's just my experience.

I will try sdjusting the timing, one thing i forgot to mention is that the ignition module tests out good even when hot and i have recently received a code 42. I replaced the wire from the coil to the ignition module and did not get a code 42 again but instead got a code 33. I will let you know when i try and adjust the timing.
