Let's talk about Speedo's
Facts:
1. Early TPI units and all Throttle Body 305 engines that came in Firebirds/camaros require the 2 pulse vss signal (Can't recall whether it's square or sine wave).
2. Late TPI Units require a 4 pulse vss signal that is the opposite (square or sine wave) of the Early vss.
This vss signal is then interpreted by the computer. The computer relays a signal to the speedo.
I need to know if the signal the computer relays to the electric speedo is the same for all electric speedometers. (ie 86-92 firebirds with both throttle bodies and tpi engines).

Don't qoute me on this but from my understanding , a 165 is a 165 and a 730 is a 730, they used a 165 on the birds 86-89 as they did on the camaro's for the same years. On my 87 camaro I know you have the speedo cable and the VSS is on the back of the speedometer itself, then the signal is sent to the computer as an input. By knowing this I would assume the 165 ecm on the bird would have to be setup somewhat similar, atleast the signal would have to be 2k pulse, I'm unaware of a 165 supporting 4k pulses. So I would think the MAF(165) speedo's and SD(730) speedo's are different for the firebirds.

Back to the topic or kinda. Since you guys seem to know about speedo's answer this. Well here is a short story
>I bought a 89 Firebird with a stock lo3 (engine was shot)
>Then I bought a wrecked 89 RS (body was shot, engine good)
>I swapped out the Camaro engine and trans into the Bird
>Stupidly I did not save parts of the old trans
>everthing works fine except the speedo.
>The camaro had a mechanical speedo though The bird is electric
>put in a electric speedo gear from astro transmission
>if I hook up the VSS and to 10MPH it shoots up to 120MPH and kills the engine
>it has been like this for a year and I havent fixed it
>what could this be?
