One header pipe not burning?

Hey everyone. I actually have a 85 Monte Carlo SS, but... with a 89 T.P.I. 350 Maf. from a Iroc installed. I just completely rebuilt the top end and fully detailed the heads and intake. I have set the valve lash about three times now, even backed them off a little. Cylinder #5,7and 6 header pipes still looked fresh and not burnt, and diid not get very hot at all. So I let off the valves on thoose cylinders a bit more... #5 and 7 have cleared up fine but # 6 still hasn't burnt... injector is working, there is spark??? The headers are headman and the motor has only ran for a total of 2hrs with maybe 10 miles on it. She still seems to have lots of power for the most part but lagy at times. I also have no codes to give me a hint as to the problem. If anyone has come across this problem before or something similar, and you have a idea or suggestion. It would be greatly apprecaited. Thanks in advance.Pics of my car and engine in the works

When I put my TPI together, I had a similar problem. My freshly cleaned injectors sat too long and gummed up. Three of the 8 were not firing well or at all. Cylinders 1,3,5 were not firing. A quick rap with a screw driver handle fixed two of them. I had to replace the third.

The way I found the problem was the fact that I DID NOT burn my hand on the exhuast. I used a temp probe afterwards and found that side was cold.

Just because you hear them click, or that you had them cleaned, or that the ohms check, you could still have problems.

Have you done an injector test with a fuel pressure gauge? Did you have them cleaned? Had they been sitting long?

Oh yes, I also had a problem with a burnt wire ... concentrated so much on getting the TPI in, that I missed some little things.

Mark.

I will have to try the screwdriver trick first to see if it helps. I did clean them along with everything else. Maybe I will buy some noid lights to test the injector itself. I must say, I do hope your wrong about the bad injector. I am just about broke from building this car, plus I don't want to take the plenum apart again.
But if that is what I have to do, then so be it I guess.... Thanks for your advice I will try these suggestions today. Oh yes it has sat for about 3 years, but they were cleaned then not recently.

I hear ya about the cost of building TPI's ...

I had my injectors cleaned about a year prior to putting them on, which I found out is not the best idea. I suppose it depends on what they use to clean them.

I seem to have my plenum off and on a few times each summer. You get pretty fast at doing it, although if you polished anything, the chances of nicking or scratching is pretty high.

Try the fuel pressure drop test and see if all 8 respond. If you have a bad one, it might not click or it may click but not flow.

My engine ran rather rough when I had this problem (5 cylinder V8), but even with one cylinder not firing, it should shake somewhat. You could even pull that plug wire off and it should make no different, right?

Yeap they are costly! The great thing is I went outside, tapped the injector a couple or times, and played with the wire... It works! I thank you for your advice, I do think the tapping of the injector fixed the problem. Hopefully it continues to work. Took her out for a run and it runs... Great! Nice and fast now too! Again thanks for your advice, hope I can return the favour some day.

Right On!

I can't take claim to the injector tap thing. I forget where I heard that, but like you, it worked for me too!

Glad to be helpful.

Mark.
PS. post a pic of your engine bay ... I'd be curious to see how you put things. I run a S15 with a TPI.

Send me an email if it does not work. I use a cable modem, so large pics are ok.
