Ok everyone... I was told thatr my 1988 Trans Am GTA doesn't have the L98 engine, but the B2L engine. This is w hat my RPO sticker reads, B2L. So, whats the difference between a L98 and B2L?

I was told B2L is the F-Body RPO code for the L98 engine

I always assumed I had L98, because thats what everyone says they have, whom have the 5.7L TPI

the L98 has aluminum heads and the B2L has the iron heads. Camaros had irons heads and the vettes had aluminum heads.

This is not true at all, L98 means it's a 350 V8 TPI ENGINE. It has nothing to do with the heads.

I am not sure what B2L is so I looked it up this is what it says

B2L : PERFORMANCE PACKAGE & ENGINE PACKAGE V8 5.7LPFI

not sure exactly what that is

With F-bodies, if you ordered the L98, you got B2L automatically. The two go "hand in hand" in the 3rd Gen F-body world.

Ahhh... so my buddy was right... B2L is simply the F-Body RPO code for L98.

B2L was a package deal, and it included the L98 within the package. Its true that the Vette and F-Body L98s were very different, but it didn't warrant either one a seperate RPO code.

What else came with the B2L package?

No L98 ever appeared in an F body....they were all B2Ls.

Somewhere down the line people started calling them L98s and it just stuck.

The L98 had aluminum heads, the B2L had cast iron also the L98 had better flowing exhaust manifolds and slightly different cam timing.

L98s.....Corvettes

B2L.......Camaro/Firebird

.......and that is final.

Borg Warner rear end, oil cooler, posi and disc brakes (which is all part of the BW rear, but was merchandised in the package).

Then why does it say B2L (5.7L TPI L98) in my friends GM list for his Formula 350?

LMGDFAO! Ohhh these debates always crack me up. So somehow the B2L is an Iron headed 350 TPI and the L98 was an aluminum headed 350 TPI. Got news for ya, not all corvette's came with the aluminum heads. So there goes your argument.

B2L is simply a code that stated you got the L98 motor and of course the A4 transmission since we all know that GM didn't make but a handful of L98 powered sticks

B2L and L98 are synonomous. Synonomous means that they are equal

Next thing I am gonna hear is that the LT1 in the Impala isn't really an LT1 because it has Iron heads as opposed to the Aluminum ones.

Any GM literature or documentation regarding the 5.7 in an Fbody will say B2L. GM never used the "L98" designation with the Fbody.

And B2L, only refered to the engine....the package described in a previous post was the G92 package, which could be added to the B2L A4 or LB9 5 speed.

If anyone has ever seen differently...I'd like to see it.

WRONG! On both my SPID and a copy of my Build Information from GM Historical Services it CLEARLY says "L98" amd "B2L".

In fact, if you look at a GM Factory Shop Manual for an F-body on possible Engine Codes (mine is a Firebird 1991) it clearly shows L98 as and engine option.

I won't even argue this fact with you. Just go down to a local GM dealership and ask to see the GM Factory Service Manual for 1991 Firebirds, page 0A-17. You will clearly see "LB9, LHO, L03 and L98".

On my copy of RPO codes from GM Historical Services it shows B2L as "Engine Package (part of L98)" exactly as typed and L98 as "Engine, Gas 8 Cyl 5.7L MPFI". THESE ARE FACTS!

As stated above, L98 was the engine code and B2L was an "Engine Package" which meant that you got some other options included/mandatory with the L98 on an F-body.

Hey chazman, if you want to come to MD you can take a gander at my RPO sheet, it lists both B2L AND L98. I don’t have a digital camera so no pics but you can come down and have a look if you would like, I’ll even buy you a beer.

If I described the G92 package in my previous post, then how come the G92 package wasn't available in 87 with the L98, but the L98 got all those options?

Weren't they available as options before 1988, then became a "package"?

In 1987, the B2L package consisted of all those items and when 88 rolled around, G92 was available with B2L because the stock rear end was now 2.77, instead of the previous stock 3.27 To get the 3.27, you needed to specify G92 in 88 and up.

ok, this is getting funny

B2L is the "aluminum head delete" option.

If you have a 350 TPI in a fbody it's a L98 with the B2L option.

you guys can argue up down left right and everywhere in between, but go check your RPO codes, IT WILL say L98 AND B2L...go look up what B2L means on the websites...

if this was already stated before my bad, i didn't read all the responses...
