L98 is the engine code.

B2L is the engine "package" code.

The original L98 in the 1985 Corvettes had cast-iron heads.

For some odd reason Chevrolet used this code for the 5.7/350 in the Z28/IROC(is it the same for the Formula-T/A-GTA?).It's basically the L98 used in the Corvette but with iron heads instead of aluminum ones.It breaks with Chevrolet's long tradition of the "L" designator codes for engines.Although they have the aggravating tendency of reusing the codes. The oil cooler may have been part of the B2L package.

iirc B2L was the package that contained the engine and the upgrades that were necessary with it on an IROC.. L98 is the actual RPO code for the engine.

RPO-B2L was the order number for the L98 350 TPI on the IROC Camaro.

My windowsticker shows B2L, but the buildsheet says L98. I'm not positive that B2L is the package because some of the mandated items for the L98 are itemized on the windowsticker with a price. I've believed it to be a package, but recently have been questioning this.

My 1990 GTA has both B2L and L98 listed on the service parts ID sticker..

I think it's just a bit of redundancy in RPO codes

As another example of this.. I have code MD8 for the 4 speed automatic transmission as well as MX0 which is also the code for the 4 speed auto transmission.

My 91 SPID lists both B2L and L98.
Talk about redundant, my SPID has three emission RPO's, one for FED emissions, one for CAL emissions, and one for EXEMPTED emissions????

My line sheet mentions the trans as MD8. I believe MXO is for the automatic, and MD8 is the type of auto it has.

I don't think any thirdgen that came with the L98, doesn't also have the RP0 B2L. B2L is the order #, L98 is the engine.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
L98 was the motor, and B2L is the option number
That's exactly what it is.

B2L included for example the oil cooler. Something that's not strictly part of the motor, but was required in order to install it.

I fail to see what's so stupid about that.

You got a motor, it has a part #; you want to put it in a car, in order to do that they put the motor into a kit that contains the motor AND all of the installation goodies; then you buy the whole package and they install it. Not rocket science, just an ordinary everyday manufacturing type of procedure used universally throughout industry.

It's in your SPIDs twice because those are Service Part IDs; some parts are listed by the L (engine) number, and some parts by the B (option package) number.

Yep, couldn't have said it any better myself. This man is 100% correct.

that makes alot of sence really. that bassicly means B2L is just the accessories on the motor that the 5.7 needed to perform at its best.
thank you!
