Stock Air Box

I was checking this out today. Is is possible to exchange where the canister and air box sit? Put the air box next to the fender with the air inlet sticking in the open area in fender and put the canister where the air box was originally. Has anybody done this yet? It looks like it can be done with minor modification. Maybe turn the mount around that they both sit on and add about 6 more inches of intake hose?

Well what your saying possible, but the easier i found was to drill to 2, 2.5 inch holes in the canister twoard the front of the canister and then off set that one 3 inches to the left of that one. Works like a charm on my 85 TPI.

Thanks man. I was thinking of putting a open K@N on there too. I wondered about when you wash your car or when it rains real bad, does the filter get wet? If not, thats looks like it is alot less restrictive. What kind of difference in performance did you notice?

Yea, it is definatly less restrictive. I noticed a difference in preformance right away. Didn't have my gtech at the time to test it. Everyone pretty much says 5-10hp. I've checked it after washing my car...still dry. Even if it gets a little wet, its still a filter. This is a very popular mod and I never heard of any water filtration problems. So I would say to definatly get rid of the air box and go with the conical K&N. It looks way cooler and you can even hear it sucking from inside the car.

Interesting, on my firebird the air box was already on the the other side of the emissions crap. I also cut large holes in the air box to let more air in, worked great

I've done similar mods. I designed a custom open air filter without the air box. I've been using it for over a year and I've never had a problem with the filter getting wet in the rain.

Slow91TA305,

I have a 89 305 TPI. Looking at your photo I don't see any MAF. Is it in there somewhere? I too was thinking of using smooth tubing in the air intake but people I consulted felt that since the airflow is relatively slow at the walls, vs center, the ribs on the stock tubing probably have little effect in causing turbulence. Does the smooth tubing seem to make a difference? Thanks. Jim.

PUT THE MAF IN THE AREA BETWEEN THE AIR FILTER AND THE RADIATOR CAP. MY MAF (1986) HAD A BEND ON THE END, AND THE K&N HOOKED TO IT. CHANGING TO THE TUBE SETUP, AND PUTTING THE STOCK PAPER ELEMENT ON THE END OPENED UP THE LAST 500 RPM ON MINE. IT WAS LAYING DOWN FROM 4000-4500 RPM. PUTTING THE FILTER OUT IN THE OPEN MADE IT RUN HARDER THOSE LAST 500 RPM. THEN I ADDED THE K&N. IT CONTINUES TO RUN HARD, BUT WILL LESS RESTRICTION, THE SHIFT POINT RAISED FROM 4500 TO 4800. MY TOTAL COST WAS $50.

I moved mine and it is part of the tech article I wrote. It's in the tech article section of this site under Firebird cold air. You can also find it at

http://87tagta.tripod.com

then go to CAI
