engine trouble

i have a 89 gta with a 350. its pretty much stock except the throttle body bypass. well when i start the rpms rise and fall then it dies. after trying to start it for a while it finally does but the service engine light turns on and it idles at a little over 1000 rpm. whats wrong?

Could be many things from vacuum to fuel to ignition.
The first thing you need to do is pull the codes from the ECM. That SES light is most likely telling you what's wrong.

i took it to the local autozone and they said it was the maf sensor or the egr sensor. i know what the maf sensor is and what it does but whats the egr and what does it do?

Stay away from Auto ****, Take it to a shop and have them check
it out. Could be something simple or not. Auto **** don't have a
clue. Codes don't mean anything if you can't read them properly.

I love GHOST codes.
