Head-less???

I have an 89 Firebird Formula 350 TPI and am interested in getting new heads along with headers. I'd like to hear some suggestions on the topic of heads. I'm not looking for monster power nor am I trying to make my car pull 10's at the track. This is a daily driver that I want to add a little excitment to my drive into work.

What are my options?

I have looked into AFR's, trickflows, sportsman II, dart, pro topline, edlebrock, vortec and Im still confused myself. Those are all good heads, It just depends what you want to do with the motor and how much money you have.

Everyone says AFR's, but they are not cheap

I would like to find some good heads for decent money and not be sorry that I didnt wait and pay more.

AFR's are the last set of heads you'll ever buy and they are the best. I would toss up a little extra money over any other aftermarket aluminum heads to get the AFR's instead.

well from reading Chevy High Performance this month i would have to agree that AFR's are the best heads available, and the difference in price is made up with performance, etc...

Alright,

So these AFR heads do seem like they way to go... what type of cam would be best mated to the heads for optimum performance? Once again... this is a street car meant for daily travel. We're not trying to win any pro-stock competitions here... just more power, not better time slips...

If you're just trying to build something with a little more power, AFRs are kind of going over the top IMO. They're great heads no doubt. However, unless you're also planning on buying a big intake, doing a good amount of PROM tuning, buying a nice converter to make it work well, replacing the transmission when you blow it up because of all the power you're making now, then your performance/$$$ would probably be better spent on a lower priced set of heads and a ful cast of supporting components.

I don't want to discourage you from buying AFRs. If down the road you think you;re going to want to build a fire breathing monster then you might as well step up to the plate now. Sounds like thats out of your scope for now, and thus something like a used set of vette L98 heads, or used edelbrocks might be more suited to you. You could still run 12s on either of those heads, and the money you save vs. AFRs will go towards the rest of the stuff that you need to go fast, rather than just heads and headers.

I would say that if you do want to go FAST...then go with Pro Action heads..

They redesigned their website.

www.procylinderheads.com

and have flow information on their heads. If you have a really hot 383 or bigger, then their 220cc heads or 235cc heads could be the way you want to go.

Look at the flow #'s and go from there. The Pro Action heads will flow comparable to the AFR 210's for less $$$...

Ed,

Thanks for the advice. I was hoping some reason would come into play and talk me out of buying $1000 plus parts just for the trip into work.

I think a set good set of uesd heads are more to my scope anyway.

I picked up an extra TPI unit for porting and a good set of vette heads and headers should add that extra umf I'm looking for.
