tbi to tpi heads and base intake

im having a heck of a time with my tpi swap. might go back to tbi. are the 90 tbi heads the the same at 87 tpi heads? could i put the tbi intake off the 90 on the 87 heads? i still have most of the componets of my tbi system and might just switch back. thanks for any help.

You can put the tbi intake on the 87 tpi heads. The tpi heads are a lot better that the crappy swirl port tbi heads, and if you do go back to tbi, it will be better than it was with the tbi heads. I just did the tbi to tpi swap, and even though I'm not quite finished, I took it for a little spin and damn, it's really worth the effort. I switched to the 081 tpi castings, ported the heads, added headers and an LT1 cam while I was at it, and it's like a completely different car. The engine looks way better with the tpi on it too What kind of problems are you having? I'd say don't give up on it, but hey, there's a lot of guys on the tbi board that would argue otherwise. This ain't the tbi board though, so I say keep going forward. Good luck either way.

Whats the 'heck of a time' you're having with the swap? I can understand wanting to just throw back on there what was there in the first place, but there shouldnt be any major issues with putting a TPI on unless you are just missing too many parts.

Ditto what they said...I just finished the swap on my '92 and it was WELL worth the investment of time and money! I went all out on mine and spent some tall cash, but you can do the basic swap for not too much. My biggest issue if I had any would be the speedo problem I had until I rewired the harness a bit (was quite easy actually).

Don't give up on the swap. You already have the TPI, I assume? If so, you're more than half way there!

acutually have everything. i had a donor car, it was a maf system so decided to go sd. so i actually have two setups. but the mechanics doing the work for me are a**holes, so basicaly they werent doing anything to my car. its been sittin for 4 months and they havent even touched it. so i took it back and i have it. i dont knw what im doing and my brother that knows alot more then me about cars is missing(well not really but hes got a new girlfriend and we dont see him to often er.... ever). so im sol and im gettin fustrated not having a car. so im thinking just go backwards. this might not make scence to u guys but if you knew where i was at u would really understand. thanks.

No, I understand completely. Are you sure you can put it back together even if its the TBI setup? May as well figure that out first and go from there.

It sounds to me that your best bet might be to put the TBI back on (assuming you can) and then research the TPI swap and get every single part you need (fuel pump included). Then swap from TBI to TPI. I was sort of in the same situation as you but I started with TBI on the new engine and then swapped to TPI midstream...hence the very mild cam which I need to change!

Anyway, really think this through as it's not just a simple swap if you're not 100% sure what you're doing. Good luck Man!

I sold mine, but try e-bay or the classifieds on this board. They sell for about $50 or so...
