accel after market full pump
I have an 1987 350 TPI IROC and went to the zz430 well i now need more fuel. So I bought the ACCEL high pressure fuel pump. It is part number (310-74702) what i need to know is this an internal pump or an external pump. and is it alright to splice the wires that conect to the stock pump and run to the new pump inside the tank.
So you bought a fuel pump but you don't know what it's really for how it needs to be installed ? Greeeeaaat.
Do you REALLY think that ZZ430 needs more fuel then a stock pump can provide ? I'm running a stock TPI fuel pump and it pumps a lot more fuel then my carb can ever handle.

Camaro89rs355, Although you could probably make the 74702 pump fit inside the tank, it was actually designed for use as an external pump. To utilize it properly, you should remove your stock in-tank pump and replace it with a fuel pick-up tube with a strainer "sock" on the inlet of it. You can then mount the Accel pump and use the existing positive and negative wiring to power it. A convenient place to mount it is to the vertical portion of the floor pan directly in front of the left side of the rear axle housing.
Hope this helps.
BTW....Odyssey, not to start a flame war but does any part of your response really answer what his question was? Your carb only requires enough volume of fuel to supply the carb with about 7psi of fuel pressure. His TPI unit needs enough volume to supply the injectors with approximately 43 psi. There's a big difference.

camaro89rs355, Wire it exactly the same as the factory pump utilizing the original relay. You can simply splice into the harness at the fuel sender unit and extend the wiring. If my memory is correct, the pump positive will be either tan or gray, the negative will be black and the sender unit wire will be pink. Be sure to solder the connections (no "scotchlocks" or "butt connectors" please) and shrink wrap or tape them very well to prevent corrosion.
