Good mods for stock TPI 305??
Heya, I just bought a bone stock 86 z28 and now I think it's time to mod. I know it wasn't the best year for TPI and my gearing sucks, but what are some good starting mods?
I am also going to change out the cam because the one in it is pure crap peanut cam, so what cam's would you suggest to go with some mods?
Thanks

Doesn't look like anyone answered your question, so I thought I would answer it and provide you with some insight.
For any mod to be worthwhile, the engine has to be running at its best. Here are a few things that should be looked at first!
Spark Plugs
Ignition Wires
Distributor Cap
Coil
Rotors & Pads
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
TPS Voltage
IAC Valve
Engine Oil
Oil Filter
160 themostat
If you've done these then guess what you've just modded your car and your ready to really get your hands in their now.
Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator
Underdrive Pulleys
Throttle Body Airfoil
Modified Mass Airflow Sensor
Modified Air Cleaner Housing (home made ram air)
Exhaust System Upgrade
Now you can move along to bigger and better mods like new heads, L98 heads are great, a bigger cam to get rid of that peanut cam, a shift kit to improve your tranny, some pulleys
and a whatever else floates your boat..

Not to be critical, but that 160 degree stat is a little low. It'll do more harm than good. 180 is a good compromise between performance and engine wear. The 160 could keep you in open loop and increase engine wear. All those clearances in the engine are engineered to be in spec at a certain temp.
I wouldn't touch the MAF either. That's another way to mess up a good running engine and cause yourself headaches. If the maf becomes a restriction with extensive mods, you're better off switching to speed density. You have a long way to go before it will get in the way on your 305 though. Start by doing the exhaust, cam, headers, and intake. once you have it breathing better, and have spent time searching the boards, you'll have an idea of what to do and where you're going. BTW, the only "free" mod I've seen to be worth any REAL power is porting the cylinder heads. You'd be better off saving your money for air foils and pulleys until you are looking for that extra 1 or2 HP. Nomex underwear on, flame away.

I thought I'd post unmolested data from a stock arap bin to show when its "Closed loop" begins, and you yourself can judge how that relates to a 160° thermostat.
