TPIS cam gear chewed away MSD distributor gear!

The last few weeks I had my car miss-firing, so I went through plugs, wires and then some. Car continued to do so until one day it miss-fired soo bad that the car back fired and went dead. Well took it to a local shop and my TPIS cam destroyed my year old MSD distributor gear. Has anyone faced this at all, and does anyone think I should receive some compenstation for either the distributor or the cam, because the shop said the cam gear was wasted too in the process. Any opinions would help.

You didn't use the bronze dist gear did you?
TPIS's cams are billet steel and require a special bronze gear on the distributor. Check out TPIS's site on the cam specs and requirements.

Interesting, but do they offer a bronze gear for MSD distributors? Secondly TPIS said i would be fine with my stock distributor gear and MSD is supposed to be a stock replacement. So if my motor isnt wasted do i buy a bronze gear for the stock one? Thanks for the response

are you by chance using an aftermarket base? There has been some horor stories that I have heard about the distributor not seating perfectly and being too high when using an after market base. I've seen a few problems on here and have seen this problem first hand with my friends Iroc.

EEWW yeah i'm using an edelbrock base, and when i talked to TPIS they said that usually with aftermarket bases you have to check distributor length so it does seat properly. My question is i ran this MSD distributor with an edelbrock base and had no problem with the stock cam. TPIS also added there is no need for a bronze gear that there flat tappet cams are made of the same material as factory cams are. I saw the distributor gear and only one side is wasted not the entire gear?

My bad. Saw TPIS cam and automatically assumed roller. But the effect you saw is basically what you get using a stock iron gear on a billet roller cam.

I've heard about that problem happening specifically with the edelbrock bases.

exactly only one side is more worn up on the gear then the other side. My friend put the stock distributor in and wham perfect.

Okay so moral of story is I should use the stock distributor when I now rebuild my motor because I drove it for a week with metal floating throughout the motor. But what is the cause for only one side getting worn out?

I assume by only 1 side, you are talking about the bottom side of the distributor gear. If so, it's because the distributor is not going in far enough for the gears to mesh properly so the cam gear is eating away the distributor gear. Oil pumps require more force to turn than most people think, especially high volume pumps.
