Gear drive will it fit?
I am gettin a pete jackson gear drive for dirt cheap. Now it is the gear drive not for the factory roller cam. My engine is a ZZ4 and putting a comp cams XR276 roller in it. Will this gear drive work. What is the difference between the gear drive for a factory roller and not for factory roller. Thanks

Im not entirely sure about your question but you may want to rethink the pete jackson or any gear drive for that mater if you are running a TPI motor. I had it on mine and it kept setting off the knock sensor which retarded the hell out of the timing and needless to say I had no power. It might have been because I had the "noisy" gear drive but I have been told that they all tend to do this to a TPI motor with a knock sensor.

There are more than a few people running gear drives on TPI and other knock sensor motors and having no problems at all. Including some pretty fast cars. Off the top of my head, tim burgess, madmax, and possibly willie run 'em....
I'm also running the Pete Jackson silent gear drive.
I also have had no problems with it, BUT several people I know have installed the silent drives(which btw are still not truely silent just less noisey)and have had problems with the knock sensor shifting timing, If like myself you don,t mind pulling your engine down and swapping parts very frequently just experimenting Id advise sticking with a chain drive on your cam.the only reason I bring this up is Ive known people that think changing a cam is a major trama in their lives,
something to be avoided, if at all possiable, if your one of those people your better off skipping potential problems

You can always make a simple desensitization circuit, or loosen the sensor, or give it some extra wraps of tape. I'd sure look into those before i went swapping a gear drive off.

Since it's mentioned here. How loud are the roller quiet gear drives? I'm going to be running an aggressive lift cam, and i drive a lot of miles, so a gear drive may be a good answer for longevity vs. the stretch a chain would have. BUT. would a gear drive be so loud as to really make the car stand out. I mean, is it burnt out power steering pump loud, or paxton blower loud?
the quiet gear drives are always noticeable but not annoying, you can further quiet them by drilling a .035 hole in the lifter gallery oil plug located behind the gears along side the cam to spray extra oil on the back of the gears, the extra oil flow helps them run with less noise. as to how noisy they are well Id say about like those worthless flex fans. but the gear drives more precise timeing is a big help in makeing hp. now someones bound to bring up that old bit about gear drives transmitting crank flex to the cam, in truth theres just enough slack in the gear teeth to keep that a non-problem

To answer the original question the old style timing gears won't fit the newer roller blocks. You MAY be able to shim it to fit, but I am not sure. Someone else may have that answer.

PJ does however say not to be used with a knock sensor, but if you've run both it and the s-trim w/out false knock, thats enough proof for me..

Those are not both on the same car. I think the most important thing is to actually check the clearance spec they give you for the idler.
Getting one eh? I might be pulling this one in a couple weeks, if I ever get around to pulling the engine. I dunno where its headed from there (owner of said part might want it), but its only got 12k miles.

To those with an inexperienced ear it sounds like a blower.
I have people asking me all the time if I have a blower under the hood.
I used to tell the truth about the gear drive but I don't anymore.
Now I tell people that my car is blown and on a 150 shot of the juice.
Their eyes get real BIG.
