fuel pump swap tips

Going to be swapping out my fuel pump Sunday. anyone have any tips on the procedure.

BTW... my exhaust is welded into one solid piece from the header collectors to the tail pipes so in order to get the exhaust out I'll have to drop or remove the rear axle.

haha.. i feel bad for you man... thats is going to be a really big pain in the a$$.. yeah you will def have to drop the rear end because the exhaust is right in the way.. i dont know if you could get away with just lowering it or not. I did one at work on a 92 RS it wasnt real hard of course we had a lift which made it a lot easier... just be really careful of the filler neck when you are moving the tank around in there, they are not too strong and they will break off good luck it wont be real hard its just that its shoved up in there so tight... so just take your time and maybe take a few beer breaks and you will be all set

Yes you will. Mine is welded too. Take the shocks off the diff & un-bolt the sway bar from the body and slowly lower the diff. The exhaust just needs to drop down, you don't have to remove it completely. Also, take the gas door and liner out, it will make getting the neck back in the right place a lot easier. You will probably need to slightly bend the neck to get the tank out, but it is pretty easy to get it back right when you re-install it. Other than that, all I can say is take your time, and don't force things.
Good Luck

Thanks guys. Everyone makes it sound like it's not scary at all. I like that. Thanks for the tips about the filler neck. I'm still open to any other tips someone might have. I'm not doing this till Sunday afternoon so there is plenty of time to put in your $.02.

If you cut a hole it will be faster, but it ugly, my friend has done it and you still need to lower the tank in order to lift up the fuel pump stuff.

You will have to remove the rear end and just ease out the fuel tank, there is a clip for a wiring harness that goes intot he body of the car, make sure you unplug that.

Also make sure you take your gascap off to relieve pressure, then undo the lines, have a rag handy to catch all of the excess fuel that will spew out.

you should be fine.

Ugly?
No. Not if you take your time and do it right..
As far as laziness.. how is it lazy to make a modification for easier future changes? I see no logic in your argument.

Lower the tank?
You are completely wrong, but nice try.

People discredit this mod.. only because they assume everyone does ****ty work. If you have confidence in your abilities, this is a great mod.

I am not arguing, I am just saying some people dont want to do it.

You need to lower the gas tank because the tubes that come out of the top of the tank go across the side of the tank, you need to lift the lid up and out in an angle in order to pull the assembly out, if you were to cut a hole, it would have to be in the shape of an L to follow the fuel lines. You have to lower it so the line move freely under the hole for better angling.

And I know this because My friend has done it. I was there, I helped. It makes the "hole" method easier

Sure, you can make it look nice, but its all personal preference, either you want to cut a hole in your car, or you dont. Seeing as how I am very **** about my car, i wouldn't do it.

No. You cut the metal lines, and then tap into them with rubber line interconnects.

You do not need to cut a huge L-shaped hole, or lower the tank.

Just make sure you flange the lines after you cut them.

Well, I don't want to cut my car up so if anyone has tips that haven't been mentioned about the dropping the tank method it would be appreciated.

Thank for the already mentioned stuff.

Just take your time and when you start lowering the rear it helps to have a friend handy. Make sure you use your super memory pills to help remember where what bolts go where. Although most of them are so different from each other they will only work in the spot they are suppost to.

Impact wrench!! I had a hell of a time without one. The job would be much easier WITH one though.
Goggles!!! Getting dirt in your eye each time you touch something will tend to **** you off!!!!
Gopher!!! Someone to hand you wrenches will save you hours of time spent crawing out from under the car everytime you need something!!

Here are some pics of my FP change.PICS HERE
