Alternator died, damage to electrics?
Okay so my alternator died and I was a ways from home so I drove it until it woudln't go anymore. I got close enough to home that I could walk and then charge the battery some and get it home where I could charge the battery and replace the alternator.. Now my car won't idle properly. I'm trying to figure out what damage I could have done to the electrical system. I know that most of the electrical components in cars will run on a huge voltage range but I'm wondering if any components could have been damaged by running it down to about 8 volts or less? anyone have any ideas?
It idles okay but with the timing way advanced.. If timing is at 6* it won't idle or it'll idle and when I put it in gear, it'll die.. Any help would be great...
Thanks,
-Bruce

you probably didnt do much damage, the electrical stuff will just stop working when batt volts is low, not damage themselves.
you might need to let the pcm relearn the fuel trims, you have a lot of mods so the trims may have been far from stock, it takes the pcm awile to learn new ones (my ranger took a full week one time) drive it for a while and see if it gets better, if it doesn't then you have a problem, but i am willing to bet that driving it will help

You didn't hurt anything. As 90iroc5spd said, you just lost the
info stored in the computer memory. Drive it for a while and
it will build the memory back and run like it used to.

Alright. I figured as much but wasn't sure.. I swapped out my stock chip for my hypertech chip and it seems to want to idle better.. I'm not sure if it's a figment of my imagination or not.. It's still having issues with idling but it is running.. A slight hesitation from standstill but it's running so I'm happy about that.. Now I have to take it back to the tranny shop. Thanks for your help, or if anyone has any other things I need to check for this hesistation/idling problem, I'd love to hear it.. Thanks..
